That's ridiculous. I'd have said thanks and hung the phone up or walked out. It's not like you're applying for under cover work for the CIA. It's just a driving job.

You could have been in jail, in the hospital, on extended vacation etc..
They'll want to make sure that the gap isn't something that is going to interfere with your responsibilities to them. -
Okay maybe I'll get bashed for this but a lot of these regurgitated scare tactics are hilarious to me.
This is not like getting a top secret clearance to work in the pentagon guys, seriously...
