hi yall! do trucking companies hire people to spy on drivers and evaluate their driving? my husband thinks he is being paranoid but noticed someone following him...what other sort of monitoring takes place?
is this sort of evaluation a common practice? also, what if any information can be collected by tracking cell phone activity? what are the rules concerning cell phone use and driving? can you use your phone if it is connected to a blue-tooth device?

I know for a fact Swift hired an outside company to video their drivers. They told us it was happening, though. The one time I got video-ed, I didn't even notice it.
Most companies have a policy against cell phone use, but it's probably one of the most broken rules out there. -
They are the other truck drivers on the road, who will drop a dime on another driver in a second.ewill71, Tennessee Trucker and V8SuperDog Thank this. -
A company called markel evaluates trucks and is paid by many companies. They will follow you for 10 to 30 minutes then submit their evaluation to the company. They don't always get the truck number correct.

Hand held cell phone use is punishable with a fine to the driver of up to $2,750 and a fine to the company up to $11,000. Companies can ban all hands-free cell phone use by company policy.

I know CRST does.
And the other poster is right, there are plenty of people out there just itching to call someone's company and report them for something/anything. -
If you're doing your job the way it's supposed to be done, there's nothing to be concerned about, right? Paranoia strikes deep....into your life it will creep....

Years ago JB Hunt himself used to grab a truck and hit the road just to check out how his drivers were behaving.
