After all the lurking I have done here I can find a straight answer to this

"how does a driver running under his/her own authority do if you live off landstar, ch robin, and dac"?Pulling a dry van. Area of operation is not an issue. Time out is not an issue. Can one hustle enough and make it just off those 3???????

I have also noticed on this an other cdl sites that threads go off topic in a second. Lol ( in also guilty myself of this). Can we trysnd keep this on topic and to the point. PLEASE.

I am not familiar with a DAC board. I believe you mean DAT? The short answer is yes. I have a friend who pulls a van running his authority. He works exclusively with only one broker. I believe he is averaging about $2/mile or so for all miles and is home every week. He is only running about 4 days per week.

One thing you need to understand is that brokers have cheap and good paying freight. You will need to be a good negotiator if you want to do well in this business. If you are willing to run where the best rates are then you should be able to do well. If you are very selective about where you run then you may not do as well.

I have a regular I pull for but when there is not freight I use a couple of loadboards and Im selective of what I pick. If it don't pay well, I WON'T HAUL IT, I prefer to sit then haul cheap freight, and usually I sit at home.

You are welcome. I am glad that I was able to help then and answer your questions now.

It make take a little while to establish some contacts. Most brokers will want to see how you run before giving you their better paying freight. Some brokers have a lot of freight in one area, but not much in another. My friend has an individual in one of the brokerage offices with whom he does business. It is a relationship that he has developed over several years. He helps my friend to pre book loads as much as possible so that he is not sitting very much. It didn't happen over night. It takes time to build relationships. Not that someone new cannot get loads from this same individual, but my friend will likely be able to get a better rate due to his relationship with that individual.

I have not pulled a van in many years. But, I have people with whom I have done business who will call on a regular basis to see if I have a truck in a certain area. If you have a truck posted on one of the load boards, you may get a call, but most people with whom I do business will call me before they post the load, if they think that I may have something in a particular area.

One thing that I would caution you about is taking loads too cheap. If you get a reputation for taking cheap freight, it will be difficult to negotiate high rates. Once you take the cheap load they know you will run for the cheaper rate. Brokers will respect you for sticking to your principles and you will eventually gain a reputation as someone who will not haul cheap freight. You may still be offered cheap freight, but it will be less frequent.
