Do you approve the way verizon is heading?

I don't know how many other smart phone geeks there are out there like myself, but if there are; do you approve verizons future plans? Ok, I read a story the other day about how VP or the head of PR or whomever of sprint basically went on camera calling out other cariers for mis labeling their "unlimited" plans. Turns out (with further reading of course) that verizon has a nasty habit of throttling peoples data speeds if they use (what they deem) as too much. WTF!? What do I pay $30 extra a month for? To get throttled? Also, it is HUGE news now that Verizon is moving to LTE. This isn't really a good thing turns out. They now offer unlimited 4g (lte) for $30 a month but have pretty much promised that they will be headed to a tiered data plan (at&t much?). Not cool considering the tiered data plans will be expensive as #### just like at&t (look at tablets and netbooks for comparison). The other cute little fact with LTE (Verizons version of 4g (which isn't really 4g actually but that's a long and heated discussion in itself)) is that they are able to CONTROL every single app you own. If they wanted to (however unlikely) they could restrict google maps from their phones in favor of V navigator, restrict youtube in favor of another V service, restric pandor in favor of another V service, etc which are all paid services. Another thing Verizon did to make me look at other carriers, DOUBLE EARLY TERMINATION FEE TO $350!!!! You have got to be kidding me! To lock someone into that expensive of a contract for nothing more than a cell phone is just sick IMO. Hmmm what else, oh yeah.. verizon taking on the iphone with their current network overload problems just for more contracts. It is well known that when you do a google search on a smart phone it will send a request to the nearest cell phone tower and then will go through a cable internet type system to severs and then send the response back to your phone. Well, when there are too many users in a given area and too many requests for data, the system will become congested and internet speed drops dramatically (look at what happened to at&t when they took on that much data with the iphone). Now with Wimax (sprints version of mobile data) the pipeline of data, if you will, is much larger and will handle more information. Another cool thing about Wimax is that it was a dream by sprint, google, and many other businesses to be open source (which ALL information should be anyway, too bad greed gets in the way) its pretty much nationwide wifi with no control over you and throttling of speed. Sorry if I touched a nerve with any die hard verizon fans. I was 100% verizon when they bought out alltel (and my service with that byout) I was even 100% fanboy for verizon up until 2 days ago when I started doing some digging about them vs the other carriers. Now? I've changed my tune a little bit and am now leaning more towards sprint as becoming my carrier in 3 months when my V contract is up. This has all been my out spoken opinion about this particular carrier and I urge everyone to do their own research before they sign a $350 contract with them. I honestly used to love them but am no longer comfortable with the total market control direction they are heading in. Time to move on to greener pastures with sprint and better customer care. Thanks for rading this very long and opinionated post... just my personal views... don't be offended.

    Mark Kling Thanks this.

The biggest issue with Wimax right now is that it has limited coverage areas. Sprint is currently using a Clearwire backbone for their 4G (Wimax) services. Clearwire is in a cash reserve crunch and is not planning any market expansions at this time.

I agree. But also remember the clearwire crutch is owned by sprint and you get clearwire coverage when sprints wimax is not available or vice versa. Sprint will expand wimax and also add lte (not particularly for, but this is the mobile data path that everone is taking) but will not teir it (I hope) like verizon. In my eyes its kind of the best of both worlds. The thing that drew me more toward sprint is their no B.S. direction. I like how honest they appear to be atm. Especially their $69.99 everything data, plus unlimited m-t-m regrdless of carrier, TRUE unlimited data (not throttled like big red), and unlimited SMS/MMS.

Sprint does not have their own wimax network that I know of. They are using Clearwire's gear for their current wimax offering. Clearwire is currently working with one of their major vendors to add LTE. It will be a relatively cheap and easy upgrade to their existing equipment. It amounts to adding a card and updating the software.

At this time Sprint and Clearwire are in a pricing dispute which is causing a lot of tension between the two companies, so it is unclear where the partnership is heading.

Hopefully both companies will avoid tiered plans moving forward.

That was a very informative post and well worth the read for me. I'm on AT&T with the iphone. I've not had any issues whatsoever except when the phone breaks. That's pricey. We have a $30 per month per phone data plan that is unlimited. Works well. I may quit the iphone due to the proprietary nature of the phone and go with a droid however. As long as all my trucking apps are available for the droid.
