Back in the heady days of the rush to send trucks overland to Iran (in the 80s mainly) places to stop and relieve oneself fully were few, far between or non-existant.
This coincided with, in the days before tri-axles, a legal need to have spread tandems.
Thus having a crap in the desert became know as a 'spread axle'.
But, to be more serious, what's wrong with doing what I do with the dogs out walking, if you are in a lonely toiletless area? Little plastic bags, you put it on your hand like a glove, pick up the offending material, then, very carefully, roll the edge of the bag completely over your hand before spinning it round and tying a knot in it.
No smell, no contamination and easily dropped into the next public wastebin.

I don’t have a toilet of any kind. That being said, I have used a plastic lunch box which I quickly cleaned out of everything in it and used it which was totally disgusting but absolutely had no other option. I have pulled into a Loves standing up behind the wheel in an attempt to keep from totally filling my shorts. It gave me a lot more tolerance for people parked crazy. You never know what they’re going through. And last but not least, needing to take a leak can be awful too. You know it’s bad when you get out and your toes are curled as tight as you can and you hadn’t even realized it. Happened to me twice.
