I am not going to say anything about them megas, if I am out there it is with a small company or independent, but with them you can have a family atmosphere and you do not want to be that one who thinks they should get the the gravy, and if I doing it myself and it is helping out someone who needs help sometimes they do pay it forward. I am for moving our country forward and that is by helping each other , Me Me Me,s keep looking in that mirror and see all the ones standing by you in a bit.

Them megas will not pay for short hops in same zipcode and they say they treat you like family, many families have some deep trouble.

Swift Lancaster dispatches empties. The yard could be full of empties but you will only get one when the terminal manager( or planner ) says you will get one.

    The reason is:
They (the terminal) favors OTR drivers out of that terminal and have them drop their loaded trailers their so they can either go home or pick up another load.

That terminal always has lots of local delivery to do and they don't like paying hourly locals to do them. You can guess who is most likely to be working the docks in that neck of the woods and how long they take to get a unload done. To get out of that terminal you will almost always be dispatched and stacked locals before an OTR load.

Yes, they will try and refuse paying you for the local. Or they will try to pay you miles only for the local. It is cheaper for them that way.

Good for you. But, no they generally don't pay for empty searches. It is cheaper for them that way.

You can protest, but they count on the protest and all follow ups (because it will be continually neglected from the following paychecks) taking more time then the 45mile deadhead is worth. Again it is cheaper that way, and you agreed to drive for CPM

Finally someone on here with some brains.
I consider all loads of the yard to be delivered locally
free labor. I don't touch them.
They never pay enough to justify the time wasted.

I'm so glad those days are behind me. But I consider my time spent with those "mega carriers" (they weren't called that then) as a worthwhile experience. I imagine some aspects are improved and other aspects have gotten worse.

When asked to do a crappy job, do it happily, but make a mess.

Not necessarily. Nobody knows all the right questions before taking their first gig.

I have absolutely no regrets about my two years with Swift, other than not getting into the flatbed division. If you learn how the planners operate and have a good relationship with your DM, it can be a good place. It was for me.
