I'm sure this question has been asked at some point but I'm getting ready to switch careers and was just wondering about the schooling. I am 38 years old and was going to pursue a career in trucking 16 years ago but came to my senses because I had only been married 3 years and had two small children. I am now going through a divorce and my children are getting ready to graduate and go to college. I've spent the last 11 years working in a maximum security prison and am sick of that scene....very, very sick. I've always wanted to drive a truck and amazingly enough it looks like the divorce is going to put some cash in my pocket. The time is now or never. I was just wondering if you sign up with a company for free schooling with a one year contract, do they pay you a salary while you're in school for 4 weeks or do they just consider "training" wages once you go to orientation? I can probably swing the 4 weeks without pay but I understand that sometimes you have to wait to get to orientation and by the time you get all of the ducks lined up you can be looking at 6-7 weeks without a paycheck? Has anyone experienced this? I'm eager to get to work (just waiting for my daughter to graduate next month) but I'm trying to plan out how much cash I'm really going to need.

No they don't pay a wage during school. Once you are hired on and training otr you will make usually a set daily wage.

Okay. That's what I thought but wanted to make sure. It seems that you really do have to pay your dues to get into the business. I'm definitely ready to though. After spending all of these years in prison I want outta here.

Something else I've been wondering. How many truck stops offer some form of exercise equipment? I worked briefly at a truckstop last year and noticed the place had antique video game cabinets, junkfood, a bunch of chairs surrounding a flat panel tv, and showers. I enjoy jogging, and some moderate weight lifting. I can take some dumbbells and stretch bands with me to keep in the truck but other than jogging laps around the place do any stops offer treadmills or anything?

You are going to be on your ### for at least 11 hours per day, and most likely on your back for another 6 to 8. So you most likely wont have to have as much food as say a delivery person. But then if you get into decks well now there is a whole lot of exercise there to be had, and the exercise equipment to do it. You have the grade 70 chain toss, the 4" strap toss, The haulin your ### on top of the load with an 80 lb tarp climb. Then there is the tarp fold up exercise when you are on the clock and need to get your next load. There is the bungee pull, and last but not least the multiple trips around your trailer walk while you are doing all the above exercises. :biggrin_2559:
