An object in motion STAYS in motion.....no matter how heavy it is.

I get crap all the time cuz I put on "too many chains" but if I don't feel secure in how it is loaded then I won't move till I do. Just like the pump base I hauled last week. I had 5 chains on it as it was pretty top heavy. The other 2 drivers only ran 3 5/16 chains across theirs. 1 guy was at the delivery site with me the next morning and had added 2 more 3/8 chains as he told me the 3rd driver had his tip over (stayed on the trailer) this morning when they were leaving the Loves. Even with my 5 3/8 chains I could see it wiggle as I took corners.

How do you know they were unsecured? Many flatbeds and dropdecks have can locks that pop up from the trailer floor when needed. To the untrained eye, it would look unsecured.

In my country because of fools not securing them you now are not allowed to transport them with out container locks fitted to the truck.

Used to haul lumber and it was amazing how many people wouldn't really crank down the straps. I use to crank them all down and put a chain on as well. People are just lazy.

My gripe is straps and banding being secured to the rub rail. The rail is to PROTECT the tie downs. NOT hold them! No body seems to get this!!! This crap is rampant on TV AND reality.

What do you suggest? I have seen some loads that put the strap under the trailer just past the rub rail.

crusty, some trailers are built with a sturdy rail and it is allowed under securement rules.

i think "rub rail" may be a little misleading, just as with spools, different trailers have different specs.

But probably had container locks on the flatbed, a lot do these days. Not going to see them unless you walk along the side of the trailer.

I always look at others loads and how they are secured and like constructive critisism on my load securement. I fully believe there is no such thing as too many but there is certainly not enough or just the bare minimum. I like that satisfied feeling of knowing my load is secured and would rather have someone ask or tell me "hey why do you have all that on there?" than asking me "why wasnt there more?" after something fell off.

Exactly the same mindset of.... "you can go down a mountain too slow every day, but you can only go down it too fast one time". Better safe than sorry 100% of the time IMHO.
