My buddy and I were hauling pumping units down to south TX ( 1 pump=2 trucks) . He had the stepdeck on that trip and the company was in the habit of loading counterweights on the upper deck.

He Hit the brakes a little too hard on one of those washboard roads and they slid forward and to the side. He had 3 chains on them, where as most of the other drivers would only throw 2 on them cause "They're on a skid and they weigh 5200 lbs each, they ain't goin nowhere." That third chain was the one that caught them.

It took us 2 hours using a road grader, chains, ratchet binders, snap binders, and cheater pipes to get the weights back onto the skid and centered back up.

He was only going around 20 mph (if that) when he hit the brakes.

I talked to the guys loading them and they no longer put the weights up top.

IMO- the art of load securement is neither taught nor stressed enough to the newer generation of truckers. Espescially those coming out of the driver mills. :biggrin_25510:

Didn't take a pic yet, but can if needed.
I now have a Cat 730 dump truck on the wagon, 51,500lbs.
It has 8 binders going from the machine to the trailer, and 1 going from trailer to trailer through a tie down point. My stuff is rated at 7,400lbs WLL. Even if DOT only give me 6,600lbs WLL, I still have more than enough. Low side is 33,000lbs of securement. Accurate side is 37,000lbs of securement. All when 25,750lbs of securement is "legal"
Takes me a whopping 10 minutes to run those extra chains/binders, especially when I normally get 2 binders on one length of chain etc. Worth it in my small mind all day long.

I watched that "king kong" movie and the movie director said no to more chains and you see what happened.

I wish I had a nickel for every load of shingles I've seen without ANY straps....

I know shingles generally ride pretty good, but still...put some straps on them.

It's easy enough to strap a load of shingles, you could have the #### thing strapped and on the road in 15 minutes...what is 15 minutes out of your day?!

I occasionally get shingles in the summer time to get me back home same day. I strap them up real good, funny part is: I'm an "outside carrier" the house carrier doesn't strap the loads if they are going 'close by' but as an outsider I have to strap..and tarp...shingles..wrapped in plastic...going 100 to 150 miles away on a same day drop. I always get asked at the other end, "why did you tarp shingles?" with that (what's this guy retarded?) look...:biggrin_2554:

I too have always wondered why you would tarp a load of shingles, especially when you pick them up they have been sitting outside since last year, and when you get to the delivery, they just stick them outside too. And they will spend the next 30 yrs on someone's roof :biggrin_2559:

As for the house carrier not strapping the load down, that is just plain stupid !!!!!!!!!!
