Do you guys in food service workout outside work

Yeah, it brings back BAD memories. Every time I see a Keystone Freight trailer on the turnpike, my back automatically starts acting up. If the people in the department stores only new. They had expandable rollers on wheels that you can bend 90% if you wanted to and lift one side higher than the other to the tail end of the trailer and then hook up a ladder roller into the trailer. Man...you talk about back breaking work. Unloading every cubic inch of a '53 with boxes weighing on average about 80 pounds was no fun at all. That's why no one retires at Keystone Freight. They leave within a couple years looking for better opportunities.

 

Our 28' trailers at GFS are floor loaded like that and while some of the boxes are light others are heavy. When our trailers are cubed out it can be tough.

 

Being a former foodservice guy myself, and having done some physically demanding jobs in the past, I really couldn't see myself doing THAT type of work until I retire. I know you're probably use to the work and making good money, but can you really see yourself retiring in foodservice?

 

In May '12 I weighed 365 and it finally got to the point that I needed to do something about it. I walked three miles a day and when that fall came I joined a gym. I rode the stationary bike for about eight miles a day, two to three times a week. Changed jobs and forgot all about hitting the gym. At the end of this past May I weighed 255. The biggest thing I've found that helps is really watching what I eat. Most days my "lunch" is one or two Granny Smith apples and a liter of water.

 

The first chance that they have for transit I am going to take. No I don't want to be in delivery forever.

 

Transit, is that linehaul by any chance? I've seen PFG and Ferrarro Foods haul doubles before, which I think are both the same company.

 

Yes that's what they call the doubles that take the empty trailers to the warehouse at night. Will see eventually I'll have to give up delivery, I can't be climbing into the side door freezer forever.I'll try to stick it out with this company, but you know if something doesn't pop in due time there are plenty of mail contractors and LTL companies here in the CLE.

 

Where is Keystone Freight located at? Is it OTR or LTL?

 

I'm gonna guess Pennsylvania. You know, the "Keystone"! They also have a yard in Columbus that I've driven by. But it isn't an LTL freight terminal. I only see sleepers pulling those trailers.

 

Keystone Freight is actually part of NRS/NRT (National Retail Systems) and believe me, you DO NOT want to work for them. Their actually a 3rd party logistics company and they do OTR, linehaul, P&D, and dedicated accounts, specializing in retail and department stores. It's been over 17 years since I drove for them, so I would imagine a lot has changed since. Their main headquarters is in N Bergen, NJ and yes they terminals in PA as well. Pay sucks for the type of physical labor that is involved. Start times around 3 am, and they do a LOT of deliveries to NYC. When I worked for them, that's all I did was make deliveries in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Long Island, basically all five boroughs. Everything is HAND UNLOAD, even when you do backhauls, you have to reload the pickups all by hand again. They're part of the Longshoresman union. EXTREMELY HIGH turnover rate. The only thing that's easy about the job is the night time linehaul drop and hook runs that they have for places like Macy's and OTR, which I know nothing about.
