Who knows on the supply/demand thing. Most people who push electric vehicles forget
the unintended consequences like required infrastructure needed for more power lines, transformers, etc.. then they whine when their viewshed is destroyed by more high tension lines, solar arrays, and windmills. Then there are the massive open pit mines to supply rare earth minerals. All the sudden poking holes in the ground for natural gas and oil doesn't look so bad.
Do you guys worry about com like tusimple making driverless trucks?

Not exactly the type of hack I was thinking about

Without new breakthroughs we will never see level 5 self driving trucks outside of controlled access routes in our lifetime.
Level 5 self-driving means: “The vehicle can do all the driving in all circumstances, [and] the human occupants are just passengers and need never be involved in driving.”
Computer Vision is what they call AI-Complete which means that it is thought to be not solvable to a human level with current computers.
The first time you run into stray elephant or a pedestrian on a pogo stick in the street all of the "deep learning" that they have invested goes out the window.
Bad lighting:

Concrete barriers:

and overturned vehicles:

Are a real problem for AI.
Mix this in with Automation bias, or the tendency to over-rely on automation and we will probably see a future where we augment drivers abilities with what computers are good at instead of trying to get them to replace the humans.
If they solve the computer vision problem they will have created a general computer intelligence which is going to destroy our entire world economy and not just trucking.
What we will probably see over the next few decades is dedicated autonomous routes with controlled access to places where humans take over. Pretty much the equivalent of a railroad on highways.
Anyone who claims differently doesn't understand the limitations of AI or they are trying to sell something. Yes autonomous driving could save the lives of some drivers but at the expense of other lives being lost. We will see some lower levels of self-driving and maybe very slow speed level 5 but we are not going to replace the trucking industry anytime soon.
And lets not even get started on security...86scotty, magoo68, Tug Toy and 1 other person Thank this. -
If it was possible they would already be using inside warehouse across the country. It’s been tried but doesn’t seem to ever be adopted. Always back to humans driving the forklift with very few exceptions. And I guarantee those exceptions are forced from upper management. Not because it makes financial since on the PNL.
magoo68 Thanks this.
