He still has to have a CDL because of the vehicle but since he isn't in commerce he is temporarily exempt from the regs.

That's not to be confused with activities in the course of business like running after a new trailer or personal conveyance. But off duty moving your own stuff one is exempt. There are people hauling cars and horses everyday to shows that are exempt. Just as long as money isn't involved is the kicker.

THAT is what I was told by FHP/FDOT. That's what i was thinking too, because I've always dreamed of having a truck and trailer but register them as an RV. I wouldn't haul anything, just drive them around for fun. FDOT told me i wouldn't need a log book doing that, just don't haul anything for money.

I hear that! My step dad had one a couple years back. A lot of upkeep on it. I always dreamed if I ever got into a lot of money or retired I would buy a day cab and travel trailer, then tour the country. No worries of anything but making sure I got diesel in the tanks and a valid CDL lol

It is actually surprising how many states that you can operate what is especially a commercial truck as an RV without any special license.

BTW, the OP never said he was transporting his family members goods over state lines. So it may not be interstate.

If you are leased on, then I assume the carrier insures the trailer, liability, and cargo for loads you haul for them. And I assume you only have bobtail insurance. Is this correct ?

If so, then there are a lot of what if's here. What if you get in some type of accident during this move ? at fault or not, you might be in a pickle. If any damage occurs to the trailer I doubt that would be covered. What if you hit a deer or something ? Is your bobtail insurance company going to wonder why you have a trailer and products in it ? What if a door is damaged or someone is hurt climbing on or off the truck or trailer ?

U-Haul is pretty cheap, I'd probably cough up a couple hundred for a U-haul truck and forget about all the potential problems with using equipment you don't really have insured to transport goods.
