Or can you go to the dmv and simply study and take the test to get the CDL?

Unless you know someone with a truck willing to let you use it for skills test no!!

You can take the written test without school, but you will need a truck for the pre-trip inspection, backing skills and the road test.

Just my not so humble opinion, unless you have driven before go to school even if it a short course.

Even if you do get a CDL no place will touch you without either a certificate from a driving school or one year experience.

Many community colleges offer CDL training and they have recruiters ready to take you after that.

You have to go to school if you want to be hired as a driver after you get your CDL........

ok....to take the written tests, no, you do not need school for that.

for the road test.....well......really no there too and here's why i say this.

i used to buy my motorbikes at a particular bike dealer. one of the sons was also a race car owner. he had a truck, trailer and some experience backing up his rig, but he couldn't drive it, he didn't have a license.

what did he do...?? he put an ad on Craig's List for someone to "sponsor" him for the road test....he shows up, takes the test, he passes, he's licensed...!!!

but in HIS case, he had everything......you probably don't. so you will need a truck and a sponsor.

as it stands now, the way things are, as stated, no trucking company will touch you with out some amount of "certified training" of at the very least, 160 hours.....more will be better though......

So if someone tells You You can't do it with out going to School is way wrong. Little harder YES, But You can do it...

wait till you make it through orientation before you say that! The recruiters get paid when you show up to orientation what happens after roll call doesn't matter. So there is a GOOD chance your going home early........just my .02 cents.
