every company i've ever worked for has said that you have to have it with you at all times period and i've never bothered to ask other drivers if they actually carried theirs with them
also I have a road trip planned in a few weeks and i'm trying to keep as little #### as possible with me
do you need your medical card when you operate a POV?

You have not had to carry your DOT medical card for a few years. I don't recall how many. I'm guessing 3-8 years since it was required to be legal in a CMV. You have never had to possess your DOT medical while driving your personal vehicle which is not a commercial motor vehicle, as far as I know.
Don't confuse what your company's policy about DOT Medical Cards may be with the regulations. Companies can make company rules more strict than the regs. A company rule is like your personal preference in food. You may really like spicy food, but your preference does not apply to me. -
If your company says you need it, then you need it. Otherwise it’s not required to carry.

The OP asked a question and then buried another question in the body of the comment. I will be honest and say I am not up on the CDLIS, and if drivers no longer have to carry their medical to operate a CDL-required Vehicle. Remember, though, if you are operating a CMV <26,001 pounds and don't have a CDL, you MUST get a medical card and have it on you.
While operating a non-CMV, you do not need a medical card on your person.tscottme Thanks this. -
No, that stopped years ago. You're supposed to self certify now and it's all attached to your license in your DMV record.
