I mostly start between 0045-0300 depending on which deliveries I have for the day. I prefer starting at stupid O’clock, and being finished by 1300. But being local in a day cab, it’s not always possible.

I'll take driving at night anytime over daytime driving. Now, with that said, all of my loading and unloading takes place during normal business hours but after that I will shut it down and do a sleeper split. I like to get up about 430pm and hit the shower and make some food and then get the truck moving about 630pm-700pm.

Getting fuel, 30 minute breaks and parking is so much easier for me when it comes time to shut down. If I do park at a truck stop I never have a problem finding a spot to call home for my 10.

    Sons Hero Thanks this.

Driving at night does reduce the stress levels, but there are a few drawbacks; Like my grandma used to say, "Nothing good ever happens after 2 a.m.". Maybe the crackpots amongst us are just less noticeable in the daytime, but man, do they come out at night! Road-raging whackos, guys selling 'stolen' watches, shameless ladies of the evening, 'sunroof flashers', and not to mention the whackos on late-night AM radio!

As for getting sleep in a truckstop; I used to try shutting down late afternoon, and would often nose-in on the back row in an effort to avoid being awakened by a loud Thermo-King. But that sometimes backfired, like when a refrigerated container pulls in (their generator is in the frame about mid-container), or when a livestock carrier pull in next to you, especially if he's hauling swine....
