I'm not a Taylor Swift fan but I must say that is a good song.

Pattyj, how do you that post was even about you? Just because it is the first post immediately after yours doesn't necessarily mean it is about you or your post especially this far into the thread.

Are there any must watch/read videos or guides on trip planning new drivers should watch?

To be honest, the best teacher is yourself. Know your limits, pay attention to your routes and you'll learn how far you can stretch it. For example I run 10-20-30-40-81 all the time. I know that under regular circumstances I can make it from El Paso to Cumby, TX/Cumby to Baxter, TN, then Baxter to York, PA for our regular runs from El Paso to York within the 11 hour limits each time. Usually leave on Friday morning for delivery Monday morning.

Fair enough. I guess a lot of factors come with experience, like knowing which loads are likely to come out of your destination area.

Yep. you can usually predict it. For example, those York, PA loads we haul usually will mean hauling a York, PA to El Paso load right back. If we haul one of our double decker trailers to Chicago, we are dead heading to Grand Rapids, MI for a Bosch load back to El Paso. Dropping near South Bend, IN usually means picking up there and going to Clifton, NJ. (We hate that run, drop and hook for the pickup is easy enough but the customer was in a god awfully tight location and recently moved to an even worse location).

Having been in that situation due to weather/accidents, I kept going to the shipper. I can shut down there, but I can still sit in the drop yard or get my dock assignment. If I know it's going to take a while for them to get to me anyway, I can still start my 10 and tip-toe the truck to the dock as needed without tripping the clock. Once loaded, I can ask to finish out my 10 in the drop yard, or stay at a curb until I can legally move. Consequences - I get a ding from Safety and usually a phone call. I know what I did. I know it was wrong. I will not make a habit out of it. Keep your nose clean and DOT won't see it in your on-board logs after 8 days.
