Planned obsolescence.
Exactly ! Every mfg. has an R&D group somewhere testing oils and components for wear factors and failure rates. If a component lasts too long then they will change it to a less durable one and that's based on cost and availability.
Oil guys do the same thing. The Rotella folks have large campus on the other side of town. They bought one of my products so I got to go visit them. While there they showed me a Ford product they bought brand new......and it had like 150k on it when I saw it....all on a dyno. They put their oils in it and run it around the clock on the dyno, gather info and tear it down.......cool stuff.
You would do better by shortening the change intervals on that Yamaha of yours IMO. I like 12k but could accept up to 15k with quality oils and filters / synthetics and then adjust to samples......

Do you use Fuel or Oil additives? Are they worth it?

I can't really speak for the wear side of it but back when I was involved in Motorsport and spending a lot of time on the dyno I seen several oil additives (some not commercially available) that significantly increased power. I would think that would have to come from a reduction in friction which should mean less wear.

Just like the roads in many cities. They fix them well enough to say last through the winter/summer. But, still have work the following year/season. Work being redoing the crap job they did. These type of things really eat me up. Um, it's no coincidence the oven or TV goes tits up shortly after the warranty expires. -
Lucas is awesome if you like black sludgey hubs and just a plain 80wieght oil

Conoco makes a product called liquid power. You add X into the pipeline thru the pig trap and it rolls in front of your transmission ( of product ) coating your pipeline. This reduces drag ( resistance ) of the products on the pipe walls and cuts the HP required to transmit your barrels of crude to say New Jersey. It's hydrocarbon based so it does not affect the quality of your goods. Isn't chemistry wonderful? -
My truck has 1.1 million miles. Original CAT C-15, 18 speed , 1 original diff. One diff replaced. I never use oil /gear lube additives. It gets greased at 10k miles and a full service at 20k. I use fuel additives in really cold weather. I follow manufacturer recommended intervals on gear oil change. Truck runs better than new.

Use fuel additives only when operating in cold weather, my favorite is Howes and a bottle of FPPF. Never had a problem and I live in cold Minnesota. Do oil samples and the ONLY times to use Lucas in the oil is when the engine is close to being overhauled and you want to increase the viscosity of the oil so it uses less in a worn engine, OR you are getting fuel dilution in the oil and Lucas will help. Other than that leave it on the shelf and save your money.

1,271,000 miles original Volvo D13 2008, never used oil additives, but I'm running synthetic oil only Rotela T6 mostly and sometimes Mobil 1 ,5w40 .
