I don't remember gross allowable weight ever being less than 73,280 and I've been around a while, maybe my memory is getting bad.

I think some were 78k and a few at 73,280. Either way 82 gross is not much to get excited about. There were and are people out the hauling anywhere from legal to say 120,000- 200,000 payload and more. I'm not talking about permitted super loads either. There are people out there running without legal license plates. Do you think everyone in Ca. has a CARB compliant truck? When I started and you went to the steel mill to load. The shipping clerk would say, there's 300,000# on the order ,how much do you want. I'll take 80k or 100k or 120K, that's being an outlaw. We called ourselves and were called "heavy haulers".

Hauling rubbish (beyond statue of limitations to post) with crap looking equipment. Made an effort to get stopped weekly if I couldn't make the landfill closing time ( payed per load ). Well maintained equipment besides the exterior and never was over weight. Thank you DOT for 30 minutes of my time and pocketed $150 for a clean inspection from the company. Asked several times, why do I get stopped. Always said not sure boss. Must be the red freightliner and young looking fella behind the wheel.

    However is a down side.
have 6 pages of clean DOT stops and have to explain each one of them within a 11 month time frame if a employer looks deep. Screw you in depth background checks ( HireRight / State police ). It's hard to not admit, I did it on purpose.:biggrin_2554:

Games are played. sure I wasted DOT time to look for actual junk, Maybe helped others similar to OP ( still funny avoiding the scales ). Crap happens.

back in the early 2000's I loaded in Chicago going to Laredo. was on a Thursday so was gonna swing through the house and leave out sunday to finish run. Got loaded and had made it nearly to Remington,In when the phone rang. The agent asked me how much weight I had on, I replied 45,000, what was on the bills. He asked me to pull over and weigh, so I stopped and ran across a CAT scale. 82,500. He asked me if I wanted to go back and get it reworked, told him no, think I can figure it out. lots of scales closed and a couple out of the ground, made it fairly easy. got to Laredo on time and the load paid better because it was actually a hundred weight load. as far as paper logs go, I guess just call me Jesse James!

I worked for a scrap steel company in Wilder Ky. Their raggedy trucks often with raggedy tires routinely scaled 100-120K, and the "drivers" routinely operated at 80-100 mph, could not have been prouder about it. There was always a race to see who could make a standard run in the fewest number of seconds.

I heard their head mechanic angrily lament "I've got all the "drivers" I can afford, hire an "operator" for a change fer chissakes."

How much you want driver? Where you want it? Know what your doing, my crane man only does this once per truck. Gary, Indiana. Back when Drivers were Men, & Women loved it. Got permits for 11'5. 3/8" plate steel, 12 wide, 55 long. No tarp. Shut UP & load me. You know the trailer, Do YOUR job old man. Northern people like to curse, & Yell. Don't know why, I think it's all the snow they have to shovel. Just a theory.
Hey #3 load the Putz from Texas first, He's making the property look bad. Get HIM out of here. Move it! we have work to do here.

We cared back then. No ones kids went hungry. Cops asked if my truck had a governor. There is one in Austin Sir. How fast will this truck go? It goes the speed limit. A Truck dropped off a bridge made 109 mph. The Dude was dead already so they didn't mind.
