I've hauled garbage out of Bethpage, NY on Long Island going to a landfill in Ohio. They put a railroad tie in the nose of the trailer with a cable attached to each end. The cables were long enough to hang out the back of the trailer. Then they jammed bales of garbage into the trailer. Once the trailer was loaded, you owned the load, no axle-out or reweigh. Have to dodge scales all the way to Xenia, OH then worry about the locals living there sneaking into the truckstop and breaking the seals. If the seals are broken the landfill won't accept the load. At the landfill they hooked a bulldozer to the cables and yanked the whole load out of the trailer onto the ground. Really rough on the trailer sides. It was supposed to be household garbage, but the bales had car bumpers and everything else sticking out of them.
Dodge them scales supertrucker!

I have had to dodge a few scales, been lied to about a few being closed. I'm a gambler I will flip my lights off every time and hold my breath till I see no chase car lol. As far as some have never had a need to dodge a scale, that smells like my wagon. I am the opposite I have never had a reason to wade in amonst 'em. True we are not not enemies, but we ain't pals either. Rivals is a good way to put it. The referee is making calls in their favor, no use giving them home field advantage too.
chevyryder86, sevenmph, PackRatTDI and 3 others Thank this. -
I don't even bother asking about the coops any more unless I pass another cow truck, most freight haulers don't answer anyway, and if they do it's a shot in the dark if they're telling the truth.....

Left Ashland,Ky grossing 82,000 with a load of steel headed for Dallas. Caught the scales closed on I-64 in Ky.Ran that night across Bluegrass Parkway I-65 to Western Ky. Parkway to Rt. 51 to I-40 into West Mempis,Ar.Laid down and slept until 5PM. Took off and was going around the Arkansas scales and got stopped by an Arkansas State Trooper. He asked me what I was doing off the interstate and I told him I was stopping to buy a pack of smokes. He said ok, I'm going to go down here where you need to get back on the interstate to cross the scales,he said I expect to see you in the next 15 minutes. He pulled away and I saw a little bar where he had pulled me over. I went in the bar and there were about 7 local "good ole boys" in there. I bought them all a beer and explained my situation. They gave me a new route around the scales that I didn't know. I hit the interstate the other side of the scales and gave that old 425 Cat 15 over hell til I got almost to Little Rock. Went around the Hope,Ar. scales that night and was in Dallas at daybreak the next morning. I was 22 years old at the time. Yeah,I guess I was an outlaw back in those days !

If you had 82K on the deck, then you were an outlaw. 82k gross, I don't think you qualify.

these days, if you use paper logs, you are an outlaw

You could see how far back your trailer was loaded, couldn't you? So far back the load didn't need to be secured? You had, what, 22 pallets on there, 2 stacks of 11 to the ceiling? You don't know how far back a typical load of 22 pallets goes? The loaded pallets were so heavy the shipper used CHEPs? It seems unlikely you could not see past them to the nose.
I could grasp it if you claimed to be a rookie. -
You're guaranteed to lose your car/home/wife pulling van freight, unless you own the whole gig. Do it for a company, and you'll lose everything.
-
Max gross back then was what, 68k? I don't know, I've only been doing it a decade. It's always been 80k for me...

If that is true I shall for ever be an outlaw
