On the one hand, I don't think that anyone should be barred from driving CMV due to Rx meds for their Dx if their Dr says it should be fine. I also see the liability issue so eloquently stated a few pages ago. Next question: If a driver is Dx with a psych disorder requiring meds that DQ them from driving, shouldn't they be eligible to collect any disability insurance they paid for?
    Next comes the SSDI claim.

Yes, bi-polar does qualify as a disability. It's pretty hard to work when you're too depressed to get out of bed.

The way things are moving with our "selected leaders" in DC, you also have to worry that a psych Dx will also lead to being barred from gun ownership.

Wow. New to the forum. This is the first post I've read and quite possibly the most ignorant statement I've ever heard. They aren't called "pyscotic-drugs" you moron they're called "Antipsychotics." Bi-polar disorder is more common than you think. I know people from all sorts of career fields that struggle with bi-polar disorder - truckers, commercial fisherman, doctors, most lawyers, counselors, psychiatrists, and even pilots. (The pilots keep it to themselves though:) Mood stabilizers and Anti-pyscotics are designed to help people get their lives under control and work for a high percentage of people. Mood Stabilizers are also used to treat epilepsy (google it gizmo cuz you probably don't know what it means. Bi-polar disorder is not something to be ashamed of - it's something you're born with and learn to manage- It can be very dangerous for the person affected and for others, IF not treated properly. Phillyguy , I got to this thread late, but I hope you went to trucker school and things are going well for you! - Don't let the uneducated ignorance of a few hold you back from anything. Unfortunately, dinasours like Gizmo are everywhere, but they're slowly going extinct. It's best to keep your condition between you and your doctor as well as friends and family you trust. Good luck!

Im new to this site and I have to say that it's very insightful.
Anyways I was diagnosed bipolar when I was 30 years old for the last 10 years I have been taking one prescription medicine and everything has been stabilized.
This past summer I was on the road helping delivering pick up trucks and I have traveled many states and I was gone a week or two at a time, lack of sleep like most and I didn't have any issues besides being tired. I love driving always have and I wanted to get away from the agony of retail and the extremly crappy pay. I like being by myself and want to do solo/regional, forget teaming!
Im just wondering if your a fully functional person and on 1 bipolar med and my dr will approve of me driving (already talked to him about it) and I don't do drugs and don't drink, can I pursue a new career or hang it up?

The question isn't whether or not your doctor approved but rather whether the DOT and DOT certified doctor will approve you which may depend on medication.
