I'm not going to say one way or the other when it comes to the bona fides of the OP. To be honest I don't care either way.
What I do care about is people with no real experience in this business putting their faith in a carrier to take care of them hundreds or even thousands of miles away from home. I remember wiring money to a friend when she was stuck in Phoenix because some drive-a-way company conned her. I got her home and a driving position with a more honest carrier. Today she is a trainer.
These basic precautions are not the same with an OO as they are with a company driver. You should NEVER leave home without enough money available to you to get home and stay in a hotel for a few days. Back in the day I kept several thousand in cash tucked away in my briefcase I NEVER spoke of until I retired. I also had a % of my pay deposited on my fuel card. Several times in my career I rented a car.
When I think about somebody leaving on a truck with maybe $40 in their pocket and no other source of cash all I can do is shake my head in amazement.
Anybody that thinks this crap can't happen to you really need to do some research on Arrow Trucking and read this bit of news right from THIS WEBSITE!!!!Gearjammin' Penguin, Lav-25, wifi_guru and 3 others Thank this. -

Others here may disagree with me -- or otherwise dislike my suggestion -- but I would respectfully submit that...all of these problems would disappear....if a driver leaves home with at least one working credit card -- that each has respectable credit limits.
The driver could buy the needed food most anywhere, & pay it back/forward once that next paycheck kicks in.
If a carrier really gives you the shaft (i.e., & not a drive shaft, either) -- the credit card provides the necessary means to buy plane ticket(s)/rental car(s)/hotel room(s) needed to get back home (those entities generally don't really like payment with cash).
If the card is lost, or stolen -- a quick phone call or two to the relevant bank/credit union negates the financial liability/mess than could later develop. The card holder is not responsible for the (later) fraudulent purchases.
Easy, peasy.....

There are some hotel locations that will not accept cash payments. At a minimum they will accept cash, but want a CC for security reasons. It is almost impossible to rent a car using cash. You can get an airline ticket with cash, but you will have to find a travel agency to get the ticket from OR get it at the counter. I have had CCs almost all my adult life. In the early days of my career, I kept more cash on hand than I did after 2000. Here is another thing when it comes to converting cash to plastic. Walmarts sell gift cards you can buy and load with cash. Regardless of how you do it, have a backup with you at all times. As above, holding a CC with a good credit limit is the best. Just have that backup!
