I work for Con-way Freight and my assigned truck is a 2010 Cascadia with a cut 430 Detroit. It seems to run better with weight. If I have between 15 and 20 k it's a dog. If I have over 30k it pulls the same hills at the same speed but sounds stronger. I grossed 78,600 the other night and kept up with real trucks around the same gross. Give me 20 and it dies. The day line-haul driver I swap it with says the same thing. Is there any real mechanical reason for this? I just had new injectors put in and I believed they turned up the torque on all of our trucks but it really pulls the same on hard grades with 20 or 40 and sounds better with 40.

We are running an 09 cascadia and I kid you not.....I said the same thing. I thought it was my imagination. Its an automatic and sometimes wont shift when empty but when its loaded seems fine

my 2010 is a dog either way...its a hard grade each direction i run..The fastest its pulled the hills was like 45 with a 14k longbox.

I cry when I get my hooks and Its like 20k, and anything else, because it makes for a long night.. 25-30mph for 50 miles of upgrades.

Well JB, I can only assume you are running the DD13 since most of those short nose Casadia run that motor. If that is the case, we have 8 of them set at 410 we NEVER go over 50,000 gross and I will tell you, these things are dogs.

I have never been as heavy as you so I can't say what would happen if loaded heavy, the rest of our spec is S/A Ultrashift and a 342 rear gear. These trucks are all 2010's for comparison I also have a 2010 Pete 384 with an ISM Cummins at 425.

Loaded EXACTLY the same with the same trailers pulling the same hills at the same time, nose to tail, my Pete and that little ISM will run circles around that DD 13.

I can't understand it for the life of me, the DD13 is a 12.8 litre motor, that has been designed from the ground up with emissions, the Cummins is a 30 year old design that has emissions hung on it and is only 10.8 liter oh yeah, and the ISM gets OVER a mile to a gallon better MPG.

If it was just one truck, I could understand, but they ALL run the same, I have been tempted to have one of them turned to 450 and see if it helps, it puzzles the hell outta me.

I used to run dd13. turned to 430 with a 13spd manual trans. never a moments trouble. Might be the autoshift needs the torque resistance to keep those parts in sync. Just a thought dont really know

no kidding on the eta stuff man. Slightest weather delay and its a nighmare on the FAC 2-3 nights later when 12-13 CRST purchse boxes show up with 700,000+ lbs of freight on it. I am not saying we are cowboys, but hired LTL drivers, we get paid to run freight as long as its safe. And because its snowing, doesnt mean it's not safe(before any of you fair weather, i dont chain drivers chime in).

But its a vicious cycle. Railroads were king before we had an interstate system, now we are back to trucking and heading back in the direction of rail.

I am going to say that IF you are getting a 2012/13 it may be better, it seems the trucks with DEF tend to run better and get better mileage. At least that is what I have found, of course how it pulls for you will be all about how it is specd'ed.

I just miss the days of my N-14 and M-11, you just put in fuel and go, IF anything let you down, it was never the motor, I just feel that I will never see the million plus miles on these trucks that I am used to getting out of the older equipment.

We are just approaching 300,000 and have already started replacing the DPF canisters. Have also replace a bunch of different sensors and a couple of injectors!

Yeah it's a dd13. Last night I was light both ways and it was a turd. I don't get it but it really does do better with weight. I literally pull the same hill at the same speed with 20 or 35 behind me. 40 slows me a little more but I think It's better than most with that kind of weight.

Do you notice if your boost stays consistent? I'm an OTR driver but that is something I noticed with my 2010 ISX. It would vary between 15-35 lbs throughout the day. Very frustrating in the mountains.
