I am still researching whether or not I want to try trucking, but I was thinking about going down to the DMV and taking the permit test because at the end of January a change is going into effect in IL that might make the process more of a hassle.

I have read that there is a 3 month window after getting your CDL that companies want you to take a refresher if you haven't obtained employment by then. Is it the same with a permit? Do companies frown if you have had your permit for a while before you go through CDL training?

I'm probably not going to make a decision for the next 2 months or so. There is a lot of information to review before I decide.

    Thanks.

You are mixing two different processes. The "learners permit", depending on State of issue, has a definite expiration. Companies hiring drivers window is about a licensed driver not being behind the wheel for "X" amount of time.

Yes the learners permit is good for 12 months. Just didn't know if schools frowned on a person having a permit for 6 months or so before attempting to start school to get the actual CDL.

the school isn't gonna care as long as you HAVE your permit. looked over at the illinois DMV website, and unless its different there, even if you have your permit before the end of january, you really dont have a CDL, so I wouldn't plan on being granfathered in, and you are still going to have to choose one of the 4 options they are adding january 30th.

Yes I will have to choose one of the four. I'm not trying to get around that. I just find the 50 bucks for the permit to be a worthwhile cost for taking my time to make the decision however if I had to get a DOT physical I'd have to pay for it in addition to the permit costs which would more than double my costs.

In CA. you don't get a permit without a physical. is it different in your state? isn't it a federal requirement?

Currently just a vision exam and the fee for a permit. After Jan 30th you will need a physical depending on the type of driving you are intending to do.

You may be right, but I don't see getting a CDL permit to drive without a DOT drug test and physical.
ETA.. I found that the drug test is a Federal requirement but physical is state.
