If it was UP to the public I'm pretty sure they would rather have people with felonies working than paying taxes to house and feed them.

Now keep in mind I'm talking NON drug, NON sex, NON violent felonies.

    1. Your right there are companies that look beyond past mistakes, I work for one of them. cr england is one that will also to an extent look beyond a felony

    2. Per BECO, Matheson, MCA, Area (all outsourced USPS contractors), per USPS contract, they cannot hire anyone with a felony

    3. Per Fedex Ground, corporate policy, they cannot hire anyone (whether direct hire or outside contractor) with a felony. I've talked to them as well, I've even had a job interview with them. I also have a good friend who is a fedex ground contractor who tried to get me a job. If he hires me and fedex finds out I have a felony, they will terminate his contract.

    4. you do realize having something expunged and a pardon are two different things. Also, 3 felonies are not likely to result in a pardon.

you have a lot to learn about people. I can assure you there are a lot of people who want felons working, but behind bars paying for their own room and board. One of the local radio shows did a 3 hr segment on how difficult it is for someone with a felony to get a job, even someone with an old felony.

They talked to all the companies that sponsor or advertise on the show (over 300 companies), only 5 would hire someone with a felony, and those places would only put you in a warehouse situation.

When I was convicted in '91, it took me 6 months to get a job, and that was with a mom/pop forklift company as a trainee. I lasted 5 weeks, after that it took me another 4 months to find a job and even then it was minimum wage sweeping floors. Via a job service that specifically helped ex-cons, I found a decent job that I worked for almost 4 yrs til I got married and then got into trucking.

It is getting harder and harder for felons to find a job, too many idiots who have ruined it for others. The job service I used closed up in '96 after 6 yrs in operation because too many guys they helped get jobs turned into repeat offenders and harmed the employer, so employers stopped using the company. One thing that maybe you haven't searched out, is there are several threads on here about felonies and driving, overall, there is a lot of support from other drivers on here (I think most truckers are apt to forgive and forget and give someone a chance) but you have to be 100% upfront with these guys, and don't BS them, don't argue with them about the advice given.

You seem to want to argue with me on this. I've been in trucking since '97, I'm on my 4th carrier (who I've been with since Nov. '97). I know what it takes to get a lot of this stuff. Yes, you can haul hazmat, but you can't haul certain types of hazmat, you can't haul certain types of freight because your not trustworthy anymore. yes you can get a TWIC card, but keep in mind, any place you apply, you have to tell them about that felony, if you don't you put that company at risk, you put their customs bond (if they have one) at risk, if you don't and something happens, you hurt more than jus tyourself.

That part of not being trust worthy is simply not true. Thats painting a rather large group of people with a broad stroke and most certainly anyone honest enough about it on the aplication process deserves at least consideration. Yes your right about hazmat and I think that only extends to any class 1.#

A pardon and expungement ARE different however ETHER ONE results in said felony being pardoned or expunged from being allowed to be considered in the aplication process. Quite frankly I would be happy with either one however I know once fines are paid an expungement is much easier.

As far as trucking I know theres more doors closed than for most people however I know I'll have a job with some company and that it will pay much more than I made with my last job ( first call tech for a mortuary and cremation company ) Yea go figure I can be trusted to enter peoples homes, remove the dead, collect and document personal items found on em lol.

Lastly Its not about arguing with people here, I was peaved at the attitutde of " go back to prison and find work there" or the " you don't deserve to work in trucking " attitude that was conveyed thru multiple posts. Not to mentioned the missinformation of not being able to get hazmat and twick endorsed.

I plan on going to every interview with my Oregon state police background check papers so its right there in black and white. Today in class several people brought up records and other things truck companies frown on.

One of them was honesty. our instructor said if you were unemployed for 6 months than you had better put that down. many trucking companies understand , especialy in these times.

Also with the twick card thats only icing on the cake, chances are it will be useless for me to be used as it was meant to be used but back in 1994 my lawyer told me the only way I could ever hope to get back into societys grace is to do everything I could to offset my offence. College, staying out of trouble, volunteering in youth mentoring programs etc. All done selfishly but all done nonetheless.

So here we are 15 years later and any ammo I can take to the job interview I'll do so.

Yea and guess what, I agree with you but not after the person has paid their price as long as the price was fair.

people with NO record their first couple of times is a slap on the wrist NO MATTER WHAT the crime when their crime is compared to someone with same charges but with a huge rap sheet. Looking back man I wish I had recieved more than a slap but the past is the past.

I bet that radio show ( for ratings ) showcased a senario in which the person with a felony on their record had something really bad or current.

I'm telling you I've had some pretty decent jobs that paid "OK" but no room to grow that you would never think someone with a felony had a chance at getting.

"Transporting radioactive tracers to cardiolgy clinics" If it had been something that lasted I would have had to get my hazmat and class C , CDL to transport the radioactive components to create the tracers.

First call tech, I used to transport the dead after picking them up from hostipal morgues, nursing homes, crime scenes and their own homes / hospice care..

Yup, both employers will be added to any trucking company aplication and both I left in great standing. Never one complaint except being late arriving to someones home.

See I agree with you its going to be hard but back when you went through what you did , did you bother to do anything to offset the felony on your record? Time + Education + previous positive references = offsetting the felony on your record.

If I was in your position I would look into getting the record expunged this way when asked about priors all you have to says is that you have had a felony 15 years prior no need for a explanation you meet the requirements then right? I trained a gentleman a while back who was convicted for ARMED ROBBERY 10 years prior. He has changed his life for the better. Keep your head up brother!

FWIW, I have a 16y/o felony, and I was told it is not a problem with May, due to the age.
We will see in the next day or two if it all works out...

Wait, so you lay this "woe is me" story on everyone, with constant "I made a mistake back in the day and deserve a second chance" stuff, but then you tell us that you are currently committing a federal felony by being a multi-convicted felon in possession of 6 firearms?!?! Wow. :biggrin_2556:

I have been looking for a job as a trucker after completing truck driving school but no one will hire me because of my misdemeanor convictions. I got all endorsements and a TWIC Card. I think that i should have did a little research before going to school for a cdl, that way I could have spent the time and money more wisely. It is very difficult trying to figure out what you can do and do it well, and getting someone to hire you in that particular field yet at the same time still being able to provide for you and your family is a real challenge. It's not just felonies that will keep you from landing a job with companies, they will not hire you with certain Misdemeanors as well. Have to be diligent and have a little bit of luck. I stumbled upon this thread and found it very interesting and informative. Hopefully everyone will have a chance at finding something that will allow them to provide for themselves and their families and at the same time allowing them to enjoy what they do. Regardless of what has transpired in the past we all should be able to put the past behind us and move forward in a productive member of our society. Keep brainstorming and Good Luck!
