Does SWIFT have a choice between smoking and non-smoking mentors?

    Greetings all.

I am considering starting my driving career with SWIFT. I have the CDL, etc., so it would be going to orientation and then out with a mentor. For the Swift drivers...I am a smoker. Can I request a Mentor that smokes as well? It would be miserable being on the road for 6 weeks, and not being able to smoke while in the truck.

Also, does Swift have the choice of smoking trucks when you finally get assigned one?

    Thanks all!

    mje Thanks this.

Swift does have smoking trucks, but they are normally going down 6% grades :biggrin_2559:

You mean 6 weeks of being healthy and allowing your body to breathe again? Gosh that would have to be just absolutely miserable. :biggrin_25514: .

It is miserable. I was smoking 3 packs a day for over 20 years; Winstons, Barclays, Pall Malls. Was a boathauler at the time and ran out of cigarettes so stopped at a truckstop to buy more. Got out of the truck and decided to quit. Saw an old yellow looking Salem laying under the drivers seat so I smoked it down to the filter. Knew right then I had a problem, so I quit right then and haven't smoked since. That was in 1986. First two weeks was tough, but I'm very hardheaded and won the battle.

First off...stay away from Swift. Don't do it man. Please. You seem like such a nice person...

Its pretty unusal to find a truck that HAS NOT been smoked in. Far as I know, no company has them designated one way or the other. Its luck of the draw really. The good news is that most truckers smoke, so the odds of a non-smoking trainer are pretty slim. Its the drivers who want a non smoking trainer that usually end up waiting for a trainer. If you get a non smoking trainer, see if their is a non smoking trainee who might swap you trainers.

Side note...I smoked when I started driving, and for the first few days...I was too scared spitless to release the death grip I had and take a hand off the wheel long enough to light one, much less smoke the thing..

Wait till the first time you drop a lit one at night and know its down there on the floorboard and there is not a thing you can do except stomp and cuss and hope in vain you put it out before it catches something on fire.

My poor trainer lol...I was also too afraid to take my eyes off the road long enough to throw the stupid thing out the window, once I was able to smoke, so when I was done I would hand it to her and she'd toss it out the window lol.

My first few months were....nerve wracking to say the least. I'm a high strung, worry-wart, overly cautious kinda girl. It took me a long time to get comfortable with driving the truck like I was the one in charge, and not IT.

Also, if you are wanting to quit...I'd suggest looking into "vapin". I've been using a fancy pants electronic one, with all the various flavors and whatnot for three months now. Only cheated once, and all it did in the 4 puffs or so, is remind me why I wanted to quit smokin.

You can request a trainer that smokes. In fact if you make such a request you will have a far better chance of getting a trainer than if you insist on a non-smoking trainer.

When you are assigned your own truck you can smoke in it. Swift may not have APU's, but they have ATU's (All Tobacco Units).
