Hi all. I wasn't sure where to put this, so here goes.
I started driving in 1994 as a regional driver. I drove OTR for one company from 1996 to 1998. After working at a different job for about 2 years, I drove gas tankers for 4 different companies in different states. In other words I drove a tractor-trailer for about 8 years. Then I went back to school, and got a job as a bus mechanic, which I've been doing for 8 years. 40 hour week, good pay, home every day(as I work the overnight). It's dull as heck, though, and it's not really "my thing".
Anyway, my son is getting ready to go off to college next year, and the stability will no longer be important as it once was. Ever since I stopped driving, I've missed it. I know I'm fighting my own "hindsight filter"; I remember that some days trucking SUCKED horribly, but overall I was pretty content.
Lately I've been looking at driver jobs, reading up on the HOS changes and the point system, and now in addition to Qualcomm they have inward facing cameras and real time gps and such, so I know some things are getting worse in trucking, in some ways.
I want to go back OTR or at least regional. Why do I feel this way? Am I losing my mind? Will this feeling EVER go away? Hell, I moved in with my mother in law for two years to go back to school to get OUT of trucking!! WTF is wrong with me??
A lot of the companies I've seen want at least 1 year of "recent, verifiable experience", and I haven't been behind the wheel of a big rig since 2004, and I lost track of the guy I was driving for. What can I do about that if I decide to take the plunge?
I am seriously conflicted. The diesel's coming up in my blood, and I don't know what to do. I welcome your opinions. Thanks!
Does the "itch" for the road ever go away?

Yes, your desire to drive a truck again as opposed to your current occupation will go away in 6 more months.

it doesnt. i had right under a year before life took me out of a truck and the OTR bug bit me hard. once everything played out i ran back. im re-starting this coming monday at prime.
but! what i wanted to do was start completely over. a few days on the pad working on my backing and stuff, then go out with a trainer. that was my choice because i like to play it safe to be absolutely sure i dont screw over my team mate because of the rust i picked up. prime even up'd the ante by giving me the option of an accelerated program if i feel im ready.
what i would suggest is just to call a few mega fleets and explain your situation. these companies still need drivers and youll be shocked at how far some will go if you show you're ready willing and able.
i've driven for prime before so i gave them a call first, my recruiter ran it up the pipeline and called me back the next day to welcome me to orientation.FullMetalJacket and homeskillet Thank this. -
Go to hardware store and buy a hammer then to liqour store for a bottle of whiskey .
When the trucking bug bites take whiskey in large amounts while beating yourself over the head with the hammer .
If it's really a bad case get wife to beat you with the hammer . -
The feeling never really goes away.

I know how ya feel, I got my class d in 1979 (that is what it was called back in the day) drove mostly local, but in 1986 I got in the operators union and did that for the last 30 years which gives me the option of early retirement.
with that being said I now have "the full blown itch" to get back into a truck and go, I actually did last spring for a couple of months. don't get me wrong, there were some things I absolutely hated about it like trying to find a parking spot when your up against your 11 or not getting a shower every night but other then that I loved it, it is what I wanted to do from an early age but I couldn't pass up the operators gig, good money and benefits but i'm thinking now's my chance and I cannot shake that feeling!homeskillet, OLDSKOOLERnWV and bzinger Thank this. -
