Does the "itch" for the road ever go away?

Hi all. I wasn't sure where to put this, so here goes.
I started driving in 1994 as a regional driver. I drove OTR for one company from 1996 to 1998. After working at a different job for about 2 years, I drove gas tankers for 4 different companies in different states. In other words I drove a tractor-trailer for about 8 years. Then I went back to school, and got a job as a bus mechanic, which I've been doing for 8 years. 40 hour week, good pay, home every day(as I work the overnight). It's dull as heck, though, and it's not really "my thing".

Anyway, my son is getting ready to go off to college next year, and the stability will no longer be important as it once was. Ever since I stopped driving, I've missed it. I know I'm fighting my own "hindsight filter"; I remember that some days trucking SUCKED horribly, but overall I was pretty content.

Lately I've been looking at driver jobs, reading up on the HOS changes and the point system, and now in addition to Qualcomm they have inward facing cameras and real time gps and such, so I know some things are getting worse in trucking, in some ways.

I want to go back OTR or at least regional. Why do I feel this way? Am I losing my mind? Will this feeling EVER go away? Hell, I moved in with my mother in law for two years to go back to school to get OUT of trucking!! WTF is wrong with me??

A lot of the companies I've seen want at least 1 year of "recent, verifiable experience", and I haven't been behind the wheel of a big rig since 2004, and I lost track of the guy I was driving for. What can I do about that if I decide to take the plunge?

I am seriously conflicted. The diesel's coming up in my blood, and I don't know what to do. I welcome your opinions. Thanks!
