I've had my CDL since 1996.
I made pretty good money until around 2005 when
pay rates for drivers started to drop like a brick.
A couple cariers I worked for went belly-up cause
of the depression and all.
The rest wanna pay in the low/mid .30's to start (pathetic).
With all the refugees driving truck these days pay rates
are dropping even further.
I know of a few carriers paying in the upper .20's
I've talked to drivers who made that much back in
the 1970's/early 80's.
Some outfits SAY they'll pay in the .40's but tac on
so called deductions for one thing or another until
you're makin refugee rates again.
Are the best days for makin money over and done
with in the truckin biz??
Does trucking pay anymore??

I imagine some folks still make a decent living at it, but probably not those working for any of the mega-carriers.

After reading the OP's post I think he answered his own question just fine.

Unless you hook on with UPS as a system driver, or a higher end ltl company. Other than that, I'd say specialized freight (heavy haul, high end vehicles, boats, etc.) Besides those, like was pointed out, you pretty much answered your own question!

UPS is locked up tight.
Can't get in there unless you know somebody.
I see there OTR trucks buzzin by all the time.
I would definitey run linehaul for them if I could get in.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 1, 2011
