My wife and I were talking about this topic last night. What we came up with is, if trucking ruins your relationships at home, they were already ruined to begin with.

If this is true, then by no fault of my own, my heart is incredibly full of fondness. *sobs quietly*

Just imagine the old timers and trying to stay connected... greasy phones at diner tables... Pay phones....

The only excuses not to stay in touch these days are lack of desire and lazyness.

Honestly I think it depends on you and your relationships. I'm coming back into trucking after a long career in business where I traveled globally so my family is very used to me being gone for weeks on end. That being said its hard on your relationships and when you come home it's important to remember what's important to you may not be what's important to them.

Friends, true ones at least adjust, and with Skype, Facetime and other connectivity tools you can keep in touch much better than before. Life on the road is not for everyone, trucking, business travel, etc. Be honest with yourself and if the impact is to high do as others have suggested and look for a local gig as soon as you can, one of my buddies made the change from OTR to local and it did wonders to address concerns from his wife.
