I started in a straight truck just before I turned 19. Went T/T around 19 1/2, celebrated my 20th birthday in Dallas in my own truck that's pictured in my Avitar. I didn't do 34 straight. I took detours in different businesses, but always pulled for other people on a as needed basis.

Not really sure why you came to this post! To stir a pot and cause some --it, be my guess!! I think you probably got yourself into other forums on the internet to and doing some pot stirring there too! If there is anything that truckers are really known for IT'S STANDING UNITED WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO TEAR THEM DOWN!! You act like the guys who hated the UNIONS the truckers had. They stirred the pot too. Sure the Union wasn't all it should have been . But the pay was better then and so were the benefits. What bothers you now!! Afraid if we stick together young and old we could make it better for ourselves again! I see no doors here, but as my former self in use to say Adios my friend, don't let the door hit you in the #####

One problem we have today is that there is no camaraderie. We once looked out for one another and had each others back. Today, everyone is out for themselves. It isn't just trucking, but society in general. I do miss the camaraderie. It had nothing to do with whether you belonged to a union. We backed other trucks up. I may have mentioned it before, but I think that technology has had a lot to do with the lack of commodore. There is still some camaraderie, but it is not what it was 20 or 30 years ago.
I don't do a lot of complaining other than about some of the useless regulations with which we must deal. I still enjoy what I do, for the most part. The heavy handedness we see from more and more government intervention in how we do our business does discourage some of us. It takes some of the pleasure out of doing this as a career.
Drivers are different than they were a few decades ago. Backgrounds are much more diverse. Drivers are much more educated than they were not so long ago. It doesn't make them smarter, but I see less of a "CAN DO" attitude with new drivers. We were more self reliant when I started. If we broke down it was usually up to us to get the truck moving again. It wasn't uncommon for several other drivers to stop and lend a hand. You will do good to have someone give a call on the CB as they pass today. They will rarely stop. Most would likely not know what to do anyway.
I have a good friend who plans to retire in a couple of years. He is just tired of all the government BS. Another plans to get back into the business next year after a couple of years out. Yet another will continue in the business because that is mostly what he has done most of his life. His Dad was a driver as is his uncle. It is sort of the family business. He earns a good living and mostly enjoys his chosen career.
Like with anything else, it is what you make of it. If you whine and complain all the time, you are not likely going to be happy with this or any other profession. On the other hand, if you maintain a positive attitude and do your job then you will probably enjoy your new found career and do well. I won't continue with any career where I am unhappy. Every profession has it's ups and downs. You just need to take things in stride. Things can't be great 100% of the time. -
On a better note let's go with a little laugh, sent by my friend Ditter !! Yesterday I was at my local Costco buying a large bag of Purina Dog Chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog, and was in the checkout line when the woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do,on impulse I told her no,That I didn't have a dog. I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added I probably shouldn't,because I ended up in the hospital last time. But that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an Intensive Care Ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices, and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way it works is to load all your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionly complete so it works well, and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that every one in line was now enthralled with my story!) Horrified!, she asked if I ended up in the intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off the curb to sniff an Irish Setter's butt, and a car hit us both. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard! Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say. You may forward this (especially) to all your retired friends. It can be their Laugh of the Day!!

Every job has it's pros and cons. This job is no different. I started driving around 1970 or 71. If I didn't enjoy it I would find something else to do. It has some hassles. The main thing that I dislike are all the useless regulations that the government continues to throw on us. We do have more than our share of whiners. There are some who should not be in this business, but it is still a good business in many ways. We still have more freedom in how we want to do our jobs than many other professions. My feeling is that if you don't enjoy what you do for a living then quit and find something that you do enjoy.
