This career is different than any other profession that you can do. You work, eat and sleep in the same space, often for 2 or more weeks at a time. You will never fully understand this industry until you actually experience it first hand. There is a high turnover, but it can be a demanding business. For some, it can be difficult being away from home, family and friends. Others thrive on the solitude. Personally, I enjoy the alone time. It gives me an opportunity to think. Much of the turnover isn't from people actually leaving the business. Many change companies and are thrown into the same pool to give the impression that the industry turnover is over 136%. I don't know what the current turnover is, but that is the last figure that I recall seeing. Some of the turnover is called churn. That means that drivers may leave one carrier to go with another. They don't necessarily leave the industry. Numbers can be deceiving.

If you want to know what it is really like working in this industry, go to a truck stop, find the drivers lounge or restaurant and strike up a conversation with a couple of drivers. Find some who have been around for a while. You will get a much better idea of what it is like.

I enjoy what i do. After 30 years in corporate america, i truly enjoy being on the road, my commute to work consists of leaving my bunk and jumping into the front seat

my office view is spectacular and ever-changing

my "office politics" consists of dealing with DOT (rarely) shippers & receivers (for about 10 min each), and a dispatcher that texts me my loads

    i cant get any better

sadly, there are some who want to turn my truck into their office, and even sadder is that some drivers are all too eager to comply

nevertheless, i enjoy my work, wouldnt change it for anything else (except to be paid well to stay home) and when i stop enjoying it, its time to leave

i believe there are too many drivers who either no longer enjoy their work, and have become beat-down men

or, there are too many newbies who dont mind being treated like mules by their company and the government

things change, some for the better, some for the worse, time will tell what happens to this industry

My wife's favorite joke goes like this...

    Q. What's the difference between a truck driver and a newborn baby?

    A. Eventually the baby quits crying.

What happens when you get enough truckers in a basement? You have a wine cellar.

lol well I love my job. I have had my issues, but then I have done some question asking and found a decent answer. Then just kept going... I have dispatchers that dislike me, but then that is no skin off my nose. I have found the best rule is to be truthfull with employer and hold them to their word.

I have only worked for four companies, I started off at swift like a lot of newbies but progressively worked my way up through the reefer side of the business.

With any job their are going to be things you don't like, for me it's hauling beer but I knew the company I work for that is their bread and butter acct. I am one of the lucky ones you could say, I work for a company that treats their drivers with respect all the way from they owner to the dispatcher.
