May I ask what you mean by "newer breed of driver" and "even though my efforts are rarely noticed"? I'm not starting anything......I'm just curious.
Frankly I find your posts on this forum very helpful. -
i will not quit whining because i want an effing pony!!!
Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
As in "newer breed" I reference the fact that I didn't start my career until 2003, long in to the day of computerized motors, and now running a 2010 Mack with the new regeneration system, takl about a pain in the butt. Honestly at 27 years old I long for the days of Kenworth K100's, although after a 100 miles I might beg to differ, but it's just a way of trucking life I've been fascinated with, I still see guys out here running cabovers coast to coast and would love to take a day to talk with them just to hear the stories, I can only imagine. As for "my efforts going un-noticed", I reference that to the fact that you rarely get a thanks for flashing your lights for the passing driver, backing out of the throttle a bit to let the truck by that's just going a bit faster than you thus insuring there won't be a ten mile back up while we play musical chairs. I pull away from the pumps at all times when finished, whether there's no one in sight and all I have to do is run in and use the bathroom, I pull forward no questions asked. I don't pee in the parking lot, or empty out my bottles in the lot. I get on the CB and give useful info to no avail, like I'm just talking to myself, but if I get on there and talk about ###### or what not I can talk for miles. I wake up and represent myself as a professional day in a day out, just like I imagine BlackW900, you Texas-Nana, and others on this board do, but rarely do I get a thanks for the service or professionalism I put in to this job. I honestly believe that if I were thrown back in to the 60's or 70's I'd get a lot more in return from this job then what I currently do. Hopefully that explains my case a little, sorry for the rant if it's viewed that way.
hammer head mn, halfburn, Precious and 8 others Thank this. -

One of my Drivers is 72 years old.Worked for me for 7 years now and only one single day off because I sent him home to rest. Out works ,out drives and out climbs drivers 35 years his junior.Only grumbles a bit when he is over tired. Can call him at 2am on his off week end and he will be in in a second with a smile. A few days ago I overheard someone ask him about trucking when he started out. There was a lot about the lack of power anything and drivers helping each other out but then I heard something that I wish I could have witnessed. He said that if you had a flat it was not uncommon for a traffic officer to roll up his sleeves and dirty his hands assisting you change the wheel.UTurn55 Thanks this.

Oh come on Nana! We are your friends, and we KNOW you better than that. Of COURSE you are trying to start something!

When I see these threads, and I've seen several of them on here now, it always makes me believe that we are doing what we are supposed to be doing with this forum.
Here we have a guy, probably an "average Joe," who is (for whatever reason) discontent with the life he has now. He grew up in the days when shows like "Cannonball" were on TV, and "Smokey & the Bandit" were movies. So all his life he has sort of wanted to try the "excitement and romance" of driving truck.
So he has finally talked himself into actually LOOKING INTO IT A BIT, and he finds that his dreams are just that, DREAMS. He suddenly sees that folks out here do not have an easy life. He sees that there are all kinds of problems that he never imagined.
And he is disappointed. So he come onto the forum, and posts stuff like this. His anger, of course, is misplaced, but it is valid anger non the less.
Now I was only in trucking for about 12 years. And my regrets about it are simple. I really wish that I had decided to do it right out of high school, instead of spending most of my life working at other jobs. I had to wait until I retired the first time, to try my hand at trucking.
What a waste.
And yes, I will piss and moan with the best of them. But then after all, I'm just a dumb, lazy (and now retired) truck driver.
UTurn55, Gearjammin' Penguin and JustSonny Thank this. -
UHHhhh.......that's MR. Nincompoop (and for others here, Mrs. Nincompoop) to you....
i only like my job, i refuse to love it or feel its my life.
I'd rather be in the classroom, or the yard, or on the road with my students, then to be at a food warehouse, or "generic" warehouse waiting in line to get to the dock, or waiting in line for the hundredth coffee break to be over so i can get my paper work and get outta there.
i do not like the DOT cops, but i will respect that they have to do a job too. i do NOT like dispatchers (tsk, tsk, nana). i do not like driving many hours and trying to get to a truck stop to find the one last parking space, only to find that some dumb arse driver took up two spaces.
i do not like going into the restaurant and wait till the waitress even just looks in my direction to acknowledge she see's me and will be with me soon. i hate the dried up foods at the all you can eat buffet.
i hate that ignorant truckers, use the bathroom, wiped his arse, and did not wash his hands, and goes for the all you can eat buffet.....(i personally witnessed that....!!).
i hate having a breakdown, and have to wait till the company mechanic decides whether you can still drive on a blown tire or blown turbo.
i hate that when i had a break down, the first 1 hour was on me, after that a whopping $10 per hour to sit, several hours for road service.
i hate that i was on the road, and "stuff" happens at home and i couldn't be there to take care of it and had to depend on someone else who didn't know any better and paid money for lousy work.
yep, all in all, i like my job now...........
i'm just glad i don't have to do this all over again.......
cuz if'n i had to.........??
i'd wannabe a beauty school drop out instead..........because i ain't gay.........i hear "they" make good money though.......those beauty school grads........
UTurn55 Thanks this. -
Aw Granny...You know, If ya ever drove a truck faster than 46 MPH that you'd just get a nosebleed or somethin'
But if you continue to be nice to me and pretend that you like me...
One of these days I'll let you stand near my truck...
You can even bring Gramps with ya...It'll give the old guy a thrill!
