My original "hypothetical" budget was around 40k. That included a $16k trailer, first 6 months insurance, 2 months working capital to get started, and a down payment on a truck. Essentially my professor is looking for a creative and effective business plan. The less start up money required, the better.
I'm thinking now I should bump up my budget to around 65k and try to finance a bit less. "Buy" the truck outright @ $35k, first 6 mo Insurance @ $10k, 2 months working capital @ $8k, & get a small loan for a slightly nicer trailer.

As for the truck, I was looking at one of these two.

I had 2 trailers picked out, originally:

Now I'm thinking of one of these 3 trailers (Open to suggestions on trailers):
    50Ton: http://www.truckpaper.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=5404399
    55Ton: http://www.commercialtrucktrader.com/listing/2005-TRAIL-KING-PNEUMATIC-112498911

Is there a website that depicts which states and under what circumstances need a pilot car?
What does hiring a pilot car normally cost?

Your saying I would need to have a tractor with a tag axle and a trailer with 3 axles to haul 85,000 lbs?
Even if the 3 axle trailer is rated for 120,000lbs Gross Weight (Like the 55ton trail king above)?
Please keep the advice and help coming. This is great!

Awesome, I will keep that in mind. I'm also working on an abnormal psychology paper. I've got my hands full.

    Another Question:

How flexible are the pick-up dates? Say a pick-up date is scheduled for the 23rd, how hard would it be to pick up earlier and how hard would it be to pick up later.

    Thanks so much guys!

Sounds like it. I actually edited a psych thesis for a guy.

Most pilot car services, if not all are private and prices will vary. Checking on website, but Oscar maybe able to handle that question better.

Not sure with flatbeds. I know with dry van we are highly encouraged to get there early cause customer may take us early on a live load.

Drop and hook, where you drop your my trailer your hauling and picking a loaded trailer, if already loaded get there asap, more of those you get and deliver more money you make.

Sure. Different axle combinations have different weight limits. For example, tandems: 34k, single: 20k, 10'2" spread: 40k, Etc. As long as axle manufacturer's rating allows it. Some states will let you run over 80k, but NON will let you run over axle limits.

if its a crane that's going to load it would be bad, cranes are expensive and the shipper would not want to set one up twice.
the question you have about putting that much weight on the trailer, even if your trailer can handle it, you still have to be able to scale your axles.

why did you want to write a plan for a heavy haul truck? Why not run a reefer/dry box. less headache overall.

Disregard that statement, I have no idea what I was thinking about when I wrote that.
