I pulled into Domino Sugar at 4:30 pm yesterday (4-16-2011) checked in with the guard and he told me to pull over in the staging area and someone will come out and get me when its my turn. So i pulled into the parking area and saw there were 3 trucks ahead of me so i laid down for 1 hr. When i got up just at that time the guard was walking over to me giving me a dock. So i pulled into dock 4 and went into shippers office and he told me to go out to my dock and wait for forklift driver, so i did. So i stood there for approx 1/2 hr and the girl running the forklift came over and said i had to go out with her and unhook my emergency line and let her put a lock on it, ok no big deal but then i had to stand out side my trl. doors while she loaded, ok no big deal again, so she loaded 2 pallets then dissappered for about 45 min, so i went to the office to find out what was going on and was told he didnt know, his job was in there not out here.
Ok so i went back to the trl. to find the load wasn't even ready yet, but i couldn't go back in my truck till it was ready, I still had to stand there and wait. Needless to say its now 10 pm. Finally by 11 pm it was ready. so I had to wait another 1/2 hr for my paperwork.
The next exciting thing that happened was i went back out to the scale and was told to come back to the dock. Just then it was shift change 11 pm so 1/2 hr later they let me back in. Then someone got in with a flashlight and looked it over and said i was ok to go. Now its 12:30 Am. I was exausted, my day started at 6 am and asked if i could pull in the staging area and go to sleep, was told i had to leave the property, so it took me 70 miles to get to the Pilot on 70, then i finally got to go to bed! The point is don't go there if you don't have to. :mmad:

Probably about 14 years ago, I (stupidly) quit a job when picking up a load at Kal Kan in Columbus, OH over the same kinda deal... they wanted me to stand at the back of the trailer and count the pallets as they loaded them--one every half hour or so. I did as they asked.

Them my dispatch wanted me to give that loaded trailer to another driver and wait on another one to be loaded! Um... Let me think... NO!

In hindsight, I should have just walked out and went to bed after the second pallet--let THEM count them. But when you're a young hot-head like I was...

My first load picked up there at 9pm and I did not get out till 11pm. Never encountered the lady you mentioned and was never told I could not take a nap on property. That was a year ago so things must have changed. They do have some tight docks in there though that were made for 48ft.

Things have changed. Last year(or around a year ago or so) a forklift driver was killed when thier in-house carrier pulled a trailer from the dock that was not ready. You know what happened next. So now they are big on safety, bigger then they use to be.

As for the load not being ready fordfan17, nothing new. And for the scaleing out and having to return to the dock, yup, again, nothing new, had that happen several times. We are there every other week. I will say, they are much more faster and easier to deal with then they were two years ago.

And I think the docks where made more for a 38' then a 48'. I have an easier time getting a 38' in the docks then I did with a 48'.:biggrin_25523:

The length wasn't that bad. The 53's can be worked in there, might take half an hour or so. What bugged me was if you were off by 6" to either side you were into another trucks mirrors, nevermind getting out of your truck. Didn't have really any issues with loading time, but wouldn't go back again if I have a choice.

Just curious, why did you drive 70 miles west to the Pilot when there is a T/A a couple miles north on 95 and Jessup T/A, a few miles south on 95.

My boss ordered me to eat dinner and saw those guys backing in trailers as if it was nothing. The forklift operator, a black male was nice and took the time to explain everything to me. Thats the only positive thing I can say about them. They need to get more dock space period. That small bridge sent a chill up my spine when going over it.

The yard dog for Abbott in Sturgis MI was 100% better.
