I've read the posts on chaining and not chaining but I'm really concerned. I'm really really new at this job and am on my way to Sacramento at the moment and have to go over Donner. I would prefer to sit than chain but when I look at the weather forecast it looks like I would have to sit for days??? 6-10 inches tonite and same for tomorrow and the chain law is currently in effect. This load is Fed Ex and is suppose to be there at a certain time or they will charge the company extra, or so it says. I can't imagine my FM just saying wait til chain law disappears. Do they?

gettinthere , I appreciate your honesty and intelligence. I am a thirty year veteran O T R driver who has made several hundred trips over Donner.
DO NOT EVER let your fleet manager decide when and how you proceed in bad weather.Tell him /her/ it? that you will proceed when it is safe to do so and when you and only you as an entry level driver feel thst you can S_A_F_E_L_Y proceed. Send the message in writing on the Qualcomm and stay put until the storm is over.

If you do not feel safe. Tell them. They wanna repower it, let them..
Thanks goodness I on my own trk. Plus running over size you can not run with chain law on...
One company I worked with their rule was, chain law on you sit and wait...

You wont sit for days, at least not from the storms we've had so far.. caltrans is pretty good at clearing the pass. And you only chain usually from truckee to kingvale or cisco. It wont be that bad..Take your time, throw some iron on and take it slow. You wont get experience if you dont do it.

Last year was was my year driving, driving in the mountains, snow and putting chains on. It is all common sense

no load is worth it being scattered all over the roadway. Its up to the driver to determine how safe it is to drive.
I used to run over Donner also, and I would wait out the chain law most of the time.. A lot of times it set up and active to get the skiers home and then it gets lifted about 3 or so AM for trucks...

Thanks to everyone for your responses so quickly! I come from Texas where we don't see too much of this stuff! And driving in it.....well if you don't have the snow you certainly don't get the experience of learning to drive in it. I've had some driving in it the last couple of weeks, just hasn't been too bad yet, and yes I am aware that it's only December! UGH!

If the Road is not Closed, and you have Fed EX you got to chain it up and Go. Or go ahead and start filling out applications.
