Currently running a 2970N2
Can I run this with it?
TEXAS STAR DX-1600 10 METER MOBILE LINEAR AMPLIFIER ( SWEET SIXTEEN 16 )
THE ONE AND ONLY ( SWEET SIXTEEN )
8-2SC2879 TRANSISTORS
100 WATT IN 1200 WATT OUTPUT POWER
1 POWER LEVEL
SSB SWITCH
I only use it for LSB38 and am wondering if this would work and if the trucks electrical system(chevy p/u, 2010) would need any modifications.
Thanks,
Don't Beat me up for the ???? ..........................BUT

Yes you can use that on SSB with the 2970....and if the radio is setup to be clean and not hacked for increased AM performance then you will talk where ever you wanted. Yes you will have to put a bigger alternator on your truck, or at the very least a bigger battery, to pull it and ground the snot out of everything so that you don't cause any interference with your trucks computer because with this much power, ground is very important!
I tell you, with that much power and a clean radio well tuned radio. Your going to be world wide on SSB for real! -
Thanks, Child of God
I have been looking at higher amp alternators. I have everything grounded already. Might make this my project for this coming fall.
Thanks again -
I'd put that question to Russ. But I think you can. And yes, the stock alternator won't last long with one of those. I could dim the headlights with my TS 667V on my 84 Chevy PK.

Hayseed, that Sweet Sixteen will draw 100 amps, or slightly more. Make sure you have a stout alternator, good wiring, and several fuses or fusible links.
Also, make sure your antenna system has good RF ground (ground plane). You do NOT want to get "mic bite" from a 16-pill box!squirrellsgnwild Thanks this. -
you can run it no problem i did for years on comp trucks, will not hurt anything,i just switched over to tube mobile some years back, love that squeal....

Texas Star amps draw more than any other linear. Take 2 thousand watt linears. 1 a Fatboy, 1 a Texas Star. Even though they do about the same wattage, the Texas Star will draw more. Don't ask me why but its a proven fact.

Your 2970n2 will be a little much for the Sweet 16. 150 watts max swinging into the box. 125 on the safe side.

.... and remember that running 1,000 to 2,000 watts won't make you hear any better..... so you'll only be able to talk to *other people* using equal power, and unless you're really scrupulous with amplifier choice and its tuning, everyone for several channels around the one you've got dialed up will be able to "enjoy" your signal.
If you find you're getting called by others who are nearby, of course, common sense (and alternator longevity) dictate putting the amp on Standby.....
