I told myself after this happened that I would never tell a soul, just because how idiotic of a mistake it was and how horribly it could have turned out. But someone might actually get something out of it so I'll swallow my ego for a minute and let loose.
I would like to say I made this mistake when I was good and green, but it was about 4 months ago. We were supplying the new Honda Factory in Greensgurg, IN with building supplies and I was running hard. 3 different log binders and printing my own fake bills of lading hard. One night after running 18 straight through just like the days before, I missed my exit for the Honda plant and had to go up the road a few miles to get spun around. No big deal.. right? Well I get off and cross over the big road, then turn down the access road to go back on south bound. I was tired, dead tired. The on/off ramps were different on this side. Both T boned into the access road. I didn't even think about this... I just saw my road and wanted to get into that lot so I could catch a few hours in the sleeper. I hit the first ramp in high range and was shifting that largecar as quick as I could. Then noticed... holy #### I'm headed Northbound on the Southbound side!!!!! I grabbed every bit of the brakes I could. Got on the radio and warned oncoming drivers as to where I was and what I had done. I caught alot of #### for it but at least 2 old hands rolled slow with their flashers and held up the traffic while I backed my moronic ### back up the hiway and up the off ramp. I was less than 3 miles away from my delivery and almost didn't make it at all. I consider myself very very lucky that no one was getting off at the same time I was making my entrance. I was pushing so hard to pay off that Pete so I could get out from under that note and stop running otr. The only thing I have in my defence is the absence of Do Not Enter signs. But thats is definately not defence enough to jeapordize other drivers and 4 wheelers lives in a bone headed attempt to squeeze a dollar out of a dime. It doesn't matter how bad you think you need the money.. don't push it. Sometimes it will work out in your favor.. but all it takes is that one time that it doesn't. I hope someone takes something away with this story. That was my last trip to Greensburg. I made my last payment 2 weeks later and quit otr. I know I will catch #### for posting this, but as long as one person remembers this story when they are thinking they can push it all the way in, I don't care at all.
Don't push too hard... heres why

Wow, I have gotten myself into some sticky situations in the past, but never something scary as that. Glad to hear the end result was much better than it could have been.

You're not gonna catch any flack from me! I've done some work in Safety, and it's because of stories like yours that I am a stickler for not running too hard! I can catch a lie on the log book really easily, and I am one of the first to bust a driver's chops for it.
I REALLY DO NOT want to have to go to the scene of the accident, and discover that my driver literally ran himself to death! And then the very idea of having to call a wife, and tell her, "I'm sorry, but your husband won't be coming home again."
Maybe someone will read this and see themselves, and see what could have happened!
Roll safe Gentlemen! Don't make your wives worry, and don't make your Safety Officer have to make that dreadful call!

You won't catch flak for posting that. You may get some sort of award, in fact.
I tried to turn around once and saw myself staring at an 8-ton bridge. I think I weighed 79,000+, with about 33k on each tandem set. I got out of that with the help of a wrecker driver and going in reverse for about a mile on a curved, one-lane dirt road. This was also about 1 in the morning. There are good folks in Iowa. That's all I have to say after that one. -
Thanks for not giving me a bunch of crap for it. I've done a bunch of bone headed stuff driving. But thats the biggest.

I thank you for that story, and I think it takes more guts to own up to doing something like that than a lot of people have.

Hey, we've all been there and done something like that IF you have been on the road for more than a year, LOL. I remember once I stopped, about 50 miles from W. Memphis AR, for some fuel and vittles. I do this, was so hungry and tired that I started eating it as I was pulling out of the truck stop...got onto the freeway, went about 50 miles and said WAIT!, I should be in Tennessee by now! Looked at the signs once more and, sure enough, I headed 50 miles the wrong way. AARGH, I was so pissed at myself. LOL.
I have actually seen what happened to you quite a few times...I remember, outside of Knoxville, TN, I was headed westbound in I-40...had my little brother with me (about 13 yrs old at that time)...all of a sudden he started screaming (it was night)...he said those are headlights coming straight at us and its another eighteen wheeler! He was right, the driver was NOT using the shoulder and WAS smack in my lane coming head on and fast! Of course, I hammered on the brakes, and hollered on the radio GET ON THE SHOULDER! (There was, of course, a little four-wheeler beside me so I had no out)...he came on the radio and was a real ### to be sure, didn't even care and he KNEW what he had done. At LEAST you cared and warned people! This guy almost killed us and didn't even think about calling on the CB warning anyone OR having the common-sense to use the shoulder. I was a trucker for over 12 years, I am amazed I am STILL alive after some of the dumb stuff I have done...and none will ever know, but God and I, LOL. -
Me too
I remember thinking 12 more miles and I will stop. Some exit in ohio, the next thing I remeber is pasing the exit. I lost 10 minuts of my life. Was I asleep or just blacked out?
It did scare me enough to wake up and make it another 30 miles. -
I did the same thing only on a divided 4 lane road. Luckily this was around 2:30am and I realized I was on the wrong side before any 4 wheelers or trucks came rolling through. The island that separated the road opened up and I just moved on over to the correct side, pulled it over, and said holy crap I need to slow er' down.

It took guts to admit what you did, and try to warn others. Sadly, many will not see themselves until it is too late for them. I am glad that your story had a happy ending.
