Don't wanna sound like a Wimp, But here goes. My current routing calls for me to cross the I-70 mountains Saturday on my trek from LA to Kearney, Neb.. It's forecast to snow up there all day Saturday. This Southern Rookie hasn't driven on snow or ice before yet, not even in a car. (1370) mile route as planned. I would like to take an alternate route that supposedly would keep me clear of the storm but it is (1500) miles. I-40 across to Tucumcari, NM US 54 from Tucumcari to Liberal, ks; US 83 from Liberal, ks up to McCook, Neb. Shortest supposedly clear route I could come up with. I haven't requested an alternate route before, but I-70 mountain corridor doesn't exactly seem like the ideal place to get my first taste of real winter driving either.Supposed to be in Kearney by 23:00 Sunday. Leaving LA mid afternoon Friday.

Should be possible if you have the hours, check with your company to see if they let you rout that way. But did you check for weather on 40 and 54? Those areas been known to get hit pretty hard.

I would think you'd have better luck staying on I-70. If you get into snow, you get into snow, that's part of driving professionally. Every one of us had to do it....eventually, and the sooner the better. You should have been trained in winter weather driving before you were let loose. In fact, it is my opinion that there should be a winter driving endorsement on our licenses. If you don't have one, you can't drive during inclimate weather, PERIOD! If you are really that uncomfortable driving in the snow/ice you should either seek professional training, suck it up and do the best you safely can, or park in the truckstop with all those that can't/won't drive in the snow.

You should forward a copy of your original question to your dispatcher. Notice you are also from Florida. I live here now but am originally from out west. Been over 70 many times in the winter. Used to load out of Rifle, Co. all the time. It can be a real joy ride, especially on the weekend with all the skiers. Do you even have chains? You should, because of the fines you could get if you don't. What is your company policy on chaining? A lot of companies from the south make you carry chains to be legal, but never require you to use them. Take the southern route if you can, and good luck. If you have to go over 70 just take your time.

Unless they get a big storm of biblical proportions, the CO authorities will be able to keep 70 roads clear. All it takes is a few inches to shut down 40 and 54 in NM.

I-70 in the winter is a pretty tough place to learn but would be invaluable to you. If you really feel that uncomfortable, ask for a re-route. Most dispatchers forget that vail pass in the winter, spring, fall is high enough (over 12,000 feet) to have major snowfall and is a steep long climb and descent with some fun curves thrown in. I will almost bet they will re-route if you ask and just remember you need lots of chains to be legal up there (no cables) and there isnt a truckstop up there.
