I agree. I moved from 20+ years in dry van to tanker 2 years ago. The most common remark from tanker drivers I found during research was "I wish I had done it sooner." The customers are so much nicer than all but the very best of dry van customers.

I've heard nothing but good about Superior Carriers and Hoffman. The only thing I don't like about HazMat tanker is wearing the rubber chemical suit. I suppose food-grade would avoid all of that, but I like where I'm at. I'm guaranteed a weekly paycheck as long as I am available.

I know Quality Carriers hires experience drivers with no tanker experience and trains them. They also have an O/O program. I've never been an O/O and am not really interested in ever becoming one.

From what I’ve seen, food grade doesn’t pay as well as hazmat and the hassles of hazmat aren’t that bad, though I haven’t pulled chemicals. I started with the food grade (corn syrup, soybean oil, cream), that lasted a few months, then got a job hauling fuel/ethanol (paid a lot more and I went home every night, though they liked to get every hour out of you legally permissible in a 5-6 day work week, to the point it kind of defeated the purpose of getting home). Did that for a year, then went to the Bakken to haul LPG and I’m thinking hard about buying my own truck next year for the first time if the place where I’m working will take me as an O/O. Company I work for now is still small but has grown a lot in just a few years and every guy I’ve talked to, company driver or owner op, says they’re straight and most have said they’re the best employer they’ve dealt with.

All the O/O’s I’ve asked came from hauling crude out here and have said that they used to be able to get bigger checks doing that, but it was inconsistent, whereas the LPG they can count on making about the same every week (and still a decent check). More generally, any guy I’ve talked to pulling a propane bottle for whatever company says it’s better than other tank work they’ve done. I’d tend to agree; danger aside, it’s a lot cleaner than fuel (or a lot of food grade stuff, really), and the gas plants aren’t down as bad of goat-trails as well sites (no tire chains on our trucks). Lot of guys travel to get here from as far or further away than Chicago, too.
