so how common is it to drive more than you should? and how common is it to get caught covering up your extra hours driving? is it kind of like an unspoken rule of thumb that to make really good money, you have to fudge the logs a bit? what are the ways that dot, or whoever, can find out and what happens if they find out? do you get fired, or fined, or what?

may seem like a dumb question, but i'm not clear on it at all.

there was some show on a few years ago where some trucker decided to "expose" the industry by taking a news person along with him on a run and showed how he had to fudge logs in order to make a living because what they, the company, asked him to do was impossible to do legally. can't remember the show, though. he ended up getting fired.

    any input would be appreciated.

Contrary to popular belief. You CAN run legal and make a good living. I do it without any problem.

Granted there are times when I have had to go over hours. Snowstorms up here can cause that to happen. Just log every bit of info and then the DOT can at least see why you may be over.

There several ways. The most common is simply checking your book against the actual distance between points and doing the math. They can do it any way they want to, though, if they have motivation to do so. Constitutional protections regarding privacy and so forth don't apply.

The bottom line is decent money CAN be made by running legal (or "close enough for government work" legal, which is the same thing), and the majority of drivers do it that way. I did, and never had a problem.

Those who claim otherwise are either stuck in really bad situations and/or companies and think that is the norm (it isn't), or, they just want to justify their own desire to maximize their earnings by any means possible and insist it is the "only way." Don't believe them.

I kind of have a question semi on/semi off topic of this....

What happens when say your load is due at say 3pm. Now lets say you get to your drop off point where you need to unload at 2pm. Now lets say you have like 4 hours of time left at this point. What happens if the drop off makes you wait like say 6 hours before they get to you? Do you just not put yourself in that position or does this kind of thing happen? If it does happen then what do you do?

Another question is lets say you are running out of hours and you cant find a place with a parking spot?

if you do something and it takes less than 7 minutes you dont have to log it, except for getting fuel.

On that note, I always make my fuel stops happen when and where they happened, and I keep my book pretty close to what actually transpired.

I will move a truck a couple of miles off the book, but never more.

If it is a situation where im going from the shipper to the truck stop and they are really close, I wont bother logging it.

If I get pulled over and im coming out of a shipper where I just sat for a few hours, my response if asked why I look tired it will be "I just woke up" they ask me where im going, "to the truck stop to go back to sleep."

You can log more than 2 hours in the sleeper birth and have it no count against your 14. Atleast that is if they havent flipped a coin and changed it again.

Good info. How do you think that works with electronic logs? I believe the company I am going to training with uses electronic logs.

I use the Drivers Daily Log program on my laptop. I love it. Makes paper logs obsolete. I am so glad my trainer showed me how to set it up. Just do it and print it out then trans flo it i to the company.
