I have desired getting a cdl for awhile now but the cost of school was always out of reach. An opportunity for paid cdl training has come but I am worried about the dot exam. I have diabetes and use a cpap. I dont know how much trouble this will cause. Do I have to disclose either during the exam? What do I need to know to make this go smoothly?

Diabetes will depend on what you use for control. I will take the easy part first. If you maintain control with just meds you qualify for a one-year card and should have no issues. I do HIGHLY recommend that you fast for 12 hours before that physical. The clinic will do a urine dip test and if they see protein in the urine it shows a lack of control. It's a bit more complicated if you use insulin. I am going to just post the link and let you see it for yourself. PAY CLOSE attention to 391.46, everything you need to know is in this section IF you take insulin. In regard to CPAP, just make sure you have all the data with you. The ME is going to want to see compliance with the CPAP. Otherwise you should be fine for a one-year card.

I dont use insulin or medication. I've only had two A1Cs over 5.7 in the last 5 years. I was diagnosed diabetic last year but the doctor said I wouldn't need metformin yet.

I'm not sure what cpap data I need or how I go about getting it. Does it take a long time?

I'm going to take a pass on the CPAP. There are several people on these boards that use CPAP and they are in a better position to help you. @Chinatown might know several so they can get tagged!

CPAP isn't a problem with trucking companies.
@kitcarguy is the resident expert on CPAP machines.
You'll need a CPAP machine that stores data because the trucking company will download the data to ensure you're in compliance for the previous 90 days.

Are you sure you have diabetes? No medication needed and A1C of 5.7

Which type driving are you interested in?
Which town/city are you in or near?

Very good question. I’ve known many who were told they were pre-diabetic, almost diabetic etc, and then go to the DMV and open the diabetic can of worms by declaring themselves diabetic when they weren’t.

I popped 6.1 twice and the doctor said once is enough to be diagnosed as diabetic. I got my A1C every 6 months for the past 5 years.

This is for bus driving. I'm a bit east of Pittsburgh PA. It's only part time and I don't know what the commitment is yet. It's just at this stage in life I can't do OTR. Pretty much local stuff is what I'm looking for.
