I have a question that my fellow company driver and I were discussing - How frequent is it that a driver has a different DOT number from his/her dispatch? Do Owner Operators generally have the same or different DOT number than the carrier theyre working for?

If you are an O/O with your own authority the DOT numbers will never change, or shouldn't, they are yours as long as you are in good standing with the FMCSA. If you are leased to a company, most times you will run under their authority and numbers. The only times the DOT numbers should change on a truck is if you change companies and lease to some one else, thus having to run under a different companies authority and numbers.
Some O/O have their own authority but do lease to companies, then most of the time who ever's freight is on the trailer is the authority and numbers it would fall under. However those case's are rare and most people don't do that. -
Thanks for this 15 over. So, just to be clear, most O/O do have the same DOT number as their carriers?

Plus the DOT stopped issuing Registrant only numbers.
As my lease operators renew their reg they have to give the state my DOT & EIN numbers and their state cab card has a section saying 'Carrier responsible for safety" w/ those numbers listed...
For a few years each o/o needed their own 'registrant only' number to renew & it just changed.
Back when each carrier had his own 'rights' you could trip lease on their rights and cover your door w/ their paper door sign.
