Hi, hope this is in the right forum. I work for a local small excavation company driving a mack tandem and on the other morning on the way to work me and another guy were going to grab fuel at a local gas station along a rural route all of a sudden we come along a DOT checkpoint. Well nauturally the dot officer asks for the registration and insurance...the registration had been up on the truck for 3 months. My beef here is the fact that I repeatedly told my boss that his truck had expired registration and he refused to pay for it..went so far as to tell me bend the plate so that the dot couldnt see it. My question here is that number one is it my fault for the ticket? as i knew the trucks registration was up. or is it my bosses fault for not reneweing the tag? And will it go on my mvr?

    Thanks, Matt

Now the owner needs to pay registration fees and a ticket, or me as a driver would be seeking new employment.

He did pay the registration fees and ticket fees... just makes me wonder what kind of person I work for. Ya know Im not a real experinced trucker but i realize your always supposed to make sure your rig is registered and dot compliable and etc. but ive known the companys owners father in law for years and was looking for experience. There both good people just fell upon hard times.

registrations on some vehicles does not cost a whole heck of a lot. if they are not keeping up with that simple cost, then you got to ask yourself what else are they NOT paying......?? are they paying workmans comp insurance, are they paying disability taxes, are they paying insurance on the vehicles, on and on. a sign of a company dying is the lack of paying the bills to keep it up and running. they may be "nice people", but when "nice people" fall on hard times, they think of themselves first, everything else later if at all.

they can file bankruptcy, wipe the slate clean, start all over again, and so on and so on. personally, i wouldn't rust these people, and i'd leave. winter is coming and unless they have sow plowing contracts to keep them afloat, they will go under.
you got to put aside how you know the guy, and boogie on down the road.

Here's the thing and the reason why the driver is at fault!!!

Your vehicle inspection isn't just to look to see if you got oil in the engine or air in the tires..... It is the driver's responsibility to make sure the #### vehicle is legally lisenced as well.

If it isn't lisenced and you drove it, then the driver is & should be held accountable.

You the driver are responsible, you drove the truck with checking it out. You are required by law to make sure the truck is road worthy, that includes all the paper work.

i dealt with a similar situation only it was an inspection sticker. state trooper told me it doesn't matter who owns it or who it belongs to. its all about who's driving it. i mentioned that i didn't even know and he said before you drive a vehicle that isn't yours you are responsible for checking registration, inspection, and overall condition of the vehicle. he then mentioned you are driving the truck so you should be well aware of these things and that is the reason you are receiving a ticket. I didn't argue with him since he was right and I was wrong and I knew it, just figured I could play the dumb game for a couple minutes at first and see what the outcome was.

Almost always, a registration ticket is a "fix-it" ticket that goes to the registered owner. After he "fixes" it, the ticket is cleared. Any fines are from the DMV for late registration. Construction contractors are notorious for being flakey. So watch out for surprises if you continue to work there. :O_o_1PIRATES21::naka::smt021:smt110
