When I was in trucking school, they made me double clutch. If you float the gears you fail. Now that I'm with a trainer, he won't let me double clutch. He says it's hard on the clutch. He makes me float the gears and I suck at it. I've gotten better, but it's still not perfect. I can double clutch and not grind gears. I grind half the time when floating. I defintitely need a lot more practice.

Does everybody float the gears in the real trucking world?

Why is this beat to death on this forum?!

Drive how YOU want, if you want to float do it, if you double clutch that's fine too! It doesn't matter how you shift aslong as your not lugging the motor, grinding gears, shocking the drive train, etc. I'm so tired of seeing this subject beat to death, neither makes you a better driver just drive the #### truck and try not to run over a bus full of kids.

    Double-Clutch when you are training.....
Double-Clutch when you are taking a driving test for your CDL...
Double-Clutch when you are taking driving test for a company...
Double-Clutch when you are driving someone else's truck....

Float 'em when you know how to properly float the gears and you either own the rig or, you have permission to float them....

    Now the secret to "Floating".....

    Listen to your engine....
Pay attention to the tach and your speedo...
Use Two Fingers to shift.....Don't "Man-handle" the tranny....Let the tranny tell you when to pull it out and put it in.....Think of it this way....It's like a woman...Get it?
