Awesome write up. Very telling of your previous industry experience. At least it is to someone that did not have that when he started. You've done very well, despite what you may think. Way better than most. To those reading who have plans to get their own authority, I cannot understate how exceptional DY's business is. Only two remarks:
The strategy and deadhead topic is close. What you're not speaking of is opportunity cost. That sets a cost point that differentiates you from a larger carrier. The whole cheap freight topic for me is a simple profit and loss case. If I take the cheap load, I reduce the loss over a deadhead while missing the opportunity for the same or greater revenue with the same or less miles. When the trip is complete, the cheap load gets me back to the good market a day later and less profitably. That case may not be true with a larger carrier with contract commitments to keep and a driver paid by the mile. So they might do better to take the cheapie. I'm not making a statement or anything. It's all about profitability.
On the bad debt, I have been fortunate to have had only one close call in four years. During that time, there have been a half dozen or so brokers we've done business with, nearly all one-time deals, that have gone out of business. Just not holding any of our invoices. I think if you continue with the same due diligence, you will find that even that one you had this year is exceptional.

Double yellow I noticed on your last update that you listed "cruise speed". Im surprised you use the cruise control.. From my research and through KR it seems like an easy MPG increase if you drive the truck yourself rather then use cruise. Of course knowing this I also use cruise despite knowing the facts mostly because I enjoy just riding along letting the truck do its thing.. Of course I run a lot of Florida/ Georgia... relatively flat and warm most of the time.

What is so great about California that people stay there and put up with the Regs and high cost of living? Not putting it down just asking.
Only place i have been out west was Washington, born and raised in Michigan but i moved to S.W. Florida 30 years ago.I love the climate here during the winter but where I live the snowbird population ruins life.
i realize if I am going to get in this Biz I will most likely have to relocate in order to be near good corridors wouldn't that hold true for California also?
Yet I would keep my Florida home as my base as taxes here are cheapcsmith1281 Thanks this. -
I was ready to ##### you out about Excel Transportation Services. They are not listed as a member of The Internet Truckstop. That's a huge sign right there. ITS is the only load board that has a real credit department and tracks history. Also, anyone who has Pacific Financial is a dead beat. They are the last resort for brokers who nobody else will insure.
Also, either find someone with an account on D&S Factors or sign up with them. You don't have to factor any loads but you will have access to their credit report on ALL brokers and shippers. They are the ultimate in credit checking.
On the topic of dead heading. I've found I'm doing much better getting out of Dodge real quick instead of hanging around for days looking for that load to bring me back to a good area. There are loads but instead of getting me to that better area they fly right through them and keep going. So, instead of passing right through a better area for $1.30 it's better to dead head to the better area for a $2.50 load and I can name the destination. I just got my good rate to Denver plus $1,100 more. I beat feet out of there 800 miles instead of taking a load for $1.25 to yet another crap hole. I got a load in about 2.5 seconds, 10,000 pounds and delivering to another hot spot.

Those that love Cali but hate the politics, taxes, and abundant layers of nanny government move to NV and AZ. Then just drive a few hours to enjoy it now and then.csmith1281, eurotrash, Grijon and 5 others Thank this. -
I want to go if only one time.
csmith1281 Thanks this. -
But without my friends, family, & property, I probably would move to another state if I were starting up from scratch. Eastern Tennessee has always caught my eye... I'm still tempted whenever I run into another bureaucratic wall, but whenever I step back and weigh options objectively, it still makes sense for me to call California home.
