    reluctantly

They are going to take an hour to inspect it (will be the third time I've had it checked) & if it looks like it'll last another two years I'll hold off until the next overhead (when I'm not 3,000 miles from home). The bullgear was replaced about 700,000 miles ago so it should have another 100,000+ left

A vague guesstimate of around $12k. They're calling machine shops & putting together a written quote now.

They are new to me, but come recommended. So far they seem at least as good as any shop I've dealt with in the past, but it is tough to trust anyone when your first experience is a repair that may exceed your truck's purchase price.

No disrespect to anyone, but 20 hours to pull and replace a head and 30 hours to pull the hood and radiator and pull down the front of the engine to replace the bullgear sounds like a a lot of hours.

Looks like they have it at 40 hours for the labor on the inframe @ $4,000. That is about right on labor for an inframe. CAT does 42 hours on a single turbo inframe and 46 hours on a twin turbo locally to me at $115 an hour.

DY sorry you have to do this about a year earlier than you planned but as someone who is about to go through the same thing in the near future your experience has been very informative.

note to self: start saving to feed the daddy of fat

DY when i had the boats I once flew my mechanic and all the parts
from Portland Me to Outer Banks of NC just because I knew it would run right afterwards
I always had to just get out of the way parts new and old were always spread around the engine room lookin like a jigsaw puzzle
another time on ship to shore radio he talked me thru rebuilding an injection pump 200 miles offshore after the Coast Guard dropped off a care package
Of course he told me how stupid I was the whole time
I always said I was going to quit if he retired but I beat him to it

    GOOD LUCK

I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your thread, as well as Red Forman's. It's a tough break for your business, but i do believe through what I've read you made the correct decision. You guys think like business people, and it shows. All will be fine because you have it. Good luck hope your on the road soon, and profitable again.
