Scored a local job out of school a few months back and had a few questions. I primarily drive an automatic tanker with a clutch but I always use shift mode bc in auto I don't agree with how and when the tranny shifts. However, sometimes I drive another truck that's an 8 speed manual. It's old and a piece of !!!! I learned how to drive on a freightliner 10 speed and only floated- never learned double clutching. That truck was smooth and I never had an issue downshifting. This 8 speed my company runs has a light and bouncy throttle. I have no issue upshifting while floating (most of the time) but can't downshift to save my life. Just a beater truck but I gotta take it our occassionally. Is there an easier way to downshift? I can float it into neutral no problem. Can I use the clutch to put it into a lower gear? I can't seem to match tge rpms to slide it into tge lower gear-it's a rough old gal.

I'm not experienced yet by any means but i learned in school on a 10 also but just put it in neutral then rev it and clutch it back in. I know all trucks are different but maybe try revving it high and if that doesnt work rev it less. just my 2 cents i'm sure the more experienced guys will chime in...good luck

Yup.
Try it high, try it low...
Then try in the middle.
If that doesn't work, a little more muscle should do the trick.
A little heavy grinding, these trannies like.

When I first started driving I drove an ole' Shaker with a 9 speed....there was no shifting it with out some kind of noise....made me feel like an idiot until I rode with the owner one day (a 30 year veteran with 3,000,000 miles) and he made more noise with it than a rock band on tour, I never worried about it after that....put a good 300,000 miles on that truck.

Stop revving the heck out of the engine when downshifting.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. -
The transmission oil protects the gears against grinding - to a certain point.
Apply too much force too often, and the tranny will turn to dust.
But light pressure with light grinding shouldn't do that.
After all, these things were designed for abuse in mind. -
You need to figure out what split the trans has. The truck that I learned in had a 400 split. So if i pulled it into neutral at 1000, to downshift I needed to rev to 1400 for it to slide in.

And yet, the 'split' is different for each gear.

Tach watching leads to gear grinding....just slow down and listen to the engine.

I disagree. Glance at the tach, so you can see at about what RPM allows the the stick to slide in. Do that a couple of times and also listen to the engine. Then you'll know what the engine sounds like at the correct RPM. After that you shouldn't need to look at the tach.
