Anybody had an experience working as independent contractor? If so do you end up paying more taxes at the end of the year (im not married and no kid) This guy's telling me I'd be making 1500 in 5 days (claiming I'll pay less tax with 1099). Then all the sudden URS called me offer me a position making 1100 weekly as company driver. Any advice/suggestion is much appreciated!! Thank you!

on the 1099 gig, are you gonna have complete freedom of when and where to go? Is he going to be force dispatching you? If so then by many regards that is against the law if I recall

No expert here. I wanted to put a driver in a truck we just bought. Found out today that a 1099 driver would have to use his/her own equipment. If they don't then the company should consider them a employee. When you 1099 a driver I believe the driver will have to pay more taxes. It might be different in another state. I live in Nebraska.

15.3% is the self employment tax. Which you will have to pay. No benefits with 1099 so you have the penalty as well just got starters.

Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)

Subtract another $2,085 for health car penalty.
Individual Mandate Penalty You Pay If You Don't Have Health Insurance Coverage

Okay so I'm new to this industry. What questions should I ask this O/O guy? He works for fleet cars. He has like 6 trucks. And I'm basically working for him. But he's working for fleetcar. I get 25% of load. Didn't get to get him weather it is a forced dispatch or not. But I did ask about the benefit. I pay my own ss taxes. He pays 500 for medical every week?

Who pays damages? I'll clue you in it's you.

    Breakdown pay?

    What is his equipment like?

Will you have freedom to dispatch yourself?

It really depends on what you want. not sure if your looking at the same type of loads or not. If your not worried about benefits and you want the experience then do what makes sense to you for a little while. Unless you really work for yourself or have been with a company for awhile I wouldn't call it forced dispatch but you really can't say no.
I actually wanted to 1099 a driver one this truck we bought. I would love to have benefits. After speaking with a tax/ accountant they recommended W4 a driver. I will have to find WC insurance now which is fine but money is tight just starting out a 2nd truck.

I tried to call but he's not answering. I remember he told me. His driver made 120k last year. So if someone could help me do the math. Let's say I make 100k this year as a single filer. How much am I really making? And at the end of the day. If you put yourself in my shoe. Are you going with URS or this guy? Say this guy don't force dispatch you.

Me personally I'm going with urs. Why you ask...

    1. W-4 driver means employee totally legal unlike the 1099 deal.
    2.medical
    3. 401k
4.trucks, URS has plenty of trucks and shops. If you blow a motor they can throw you in another truck.
    5. 125k isn't enough incintive for me to be "self employed"

    sxdime and Bento1945 Thank this.
