Most companies do not have driver facing cameras.

 

They are a blessing and a curse. I drove with one company that had them. Saved me when my co driver lied.
But I still don't like em

 

Camera is running all of the time. The system remembers the last several seconds or minutes and overwrites that every few seconds or minutes. Hard braking, or sharp turning and some of the nanny systems activate the camera and mark the video to be held onto. Company policy varies but most do not allow you to eat, drink while driving. You may be allowed a single touch of your phone or GPS every so often. The company will tell you, and they mean what they tell you. It doesn't have to make sense to you or meet with your approval. If their rules don't work for you, work somewhere else. They are handing over very expensive equipment and you are a liability to them so they want you to be as careful AS THEY DECIDE, not as careful as you prefer to be.

 

Talking and texting is EXACTLY what they DO NOT want you doing while driving. It is illegal and increases your odds of an accident. 1 hour in traffic and you will see 90% of all of the cars are talking/texting while they weave, drive fast/slow, make erratic maneuvers because they were not paying attention. Getting a ticket for screwing with your phone while driving is almost as bad as a DUI, almost.

 

The concentration you devote to the talking/texting is the dangerous part, not the touch or the holding of the phone. The job is controlling a much, much heavier and longer vehicle with a high center of gravity and tremendous stopping distance. The industry is already filling up with 4-wheel drivers bringing their horrible and dangerous bad habits into the industry. This not that one long car trip someone took a long time ago, but you get paid. It's a lot of concentration and anticipation, and reacting to the idiots on the roads and the idiots in dispatch. Talking to the company about using the phone is a clear signal, to them, they had better watch you like a hawk and jettison you before you wreck their truck. The companies want someone focused on the job, not the phone. Most drivers enjoy the time away from people. Every time my phone rang I said what pilots said before a fatal impact, Oh **** before answering. You do you.
