    Hi Friends,

    DRIVER FACING CAMS
Yesterday, I managed to have a chat with a LTL driver of SAIA in FLA (while he was waiting for his freight). We got to talking about Dash-cams. He begins to tell me that HIS COMPANY will begin Requiring Driver Facing Cams (in the near future...1-2yrs). THE REASON: Insurance companies will give companies a hugh RATE reduction making them more competitive. If this is the case, all companies will do the same. He also said, at that point, you will not be allowed to make phone calls, use ebuds, NOR make speaker phone calls because there will be an internal voice activated system that picks up your voice (big brother is coming).

    SHIFTING LIABILITY

ME THINKS in addition, if a Driver is written up for violating what-ever rules that maybe written (driver took both hands off the wheel, driver picked his nose, driver was listening to music with ear buds, etc), the companies will TRY TO SHIFT "liability for any accidents" that may occur ONTO the Driver and AWAY from themselves (does a company protect its own interest before the driver? Will the Company point the finger at the Driver)?

    SCARY THOUGHT
Well, its a scary thought that you will be watched 8-10hrs a day and judged to be making a mistake or not. It creates more pressure for the Drivers (and even paranoia). I'm not a paranoid person, and i keep my hands on the wheel, i don't keep both hands on the wheel 8-10hrs a day. Sometimes i reach down and turn-on the radio, or make a speaker phone call, etc.

    QUESTIONS
What can be done about this up-coming Trend in the future?
Are there any companies that are doing "DRIVER FACING CAMS....NOW?"

    Thought / Comments?

    Thanks!

The driver facing cam did no good when someone sideswiped me, you have to lean way forward into a position to hit the button to get a shot of yourself and out the front . You can buy ones that are looking down the sides and the front while being on a loop of @ 12 hours that will do more good than trying to pin everything on the driver. They are not about saftey, its about passing blame onto the worker/driver.

There are many outfits running cameras now. Check the thread in the Inside Scoop section.

Think about that for a minute.

ABC trucking has a driver on camera texting while he runs into a school bus and kills a bunch of kids, injures a bunch more.

Do you think the company and their insurer will be relieved of liability due to the fact they can show the driver was clearly at fault?

    Of course not.

And deny the slip-and fall lawyers the bigger of the two paydays? We certainly wouldn't want that.

You're being Factitious. HOWEVER, the driver could easily be charged with "Reckless driving AND will be personally mentioned in the Lawsuit. That means all that money he squirreled away (driving OTR) will be at risk (unless he has personal liability coverage and even then, the attorneys will go after him). ALSO, there probably is some paper-work attaching liability too drivers who are found at fault. DID YOU READ your paperwork?

They're not about "being protected liability-wise" in an accident. They're about behavior modification and bad behavior prevention. Nothing more nothing less.

But I'm not buying the "reduced premiums" line but they have to come up with something other than "we want a robot in the seat and this device will go a long way to those ends".

BIG insurance companies compete for these accounts. I strongly suspect companies that use DRIVER FACING cameras (DFC) pay less that those who do not. Companies that use DFC probably loose more drivers than keep.
